In Slime Dynamics, Ben Woodard states that “Contagion becomes neither death nor life but protracted life, a state of never quite being dead – an undeadness not of the living dead but of " dead living ... death becomes cracked open and endless” .
Opeiko’s track refers to this kind of state – dead trees growing – also an ideal habitat for the deathwatch beetle. “Only Dead Trees are Growing Here” is a line excerpted from black metal band Mayhem’s “Funeral Fog”, the song describing a decayed but living landscape. The song also serves as core material for the creation of this track. It was stretched by 600% and portions sliced apart to create the grinding rhythm of the death watch beetle, resulting in an assaulting abrasion that scrapes along with the decelerated track. The beats of a diseased heart are incorporated as an undercurrent.
Although the podcast is not exclusively referential to black metal, the genre was a driving inspiration for the project, including the logo created. This is because black metal beckons to frustration with contemporary culture and often recalls uncanny morbidity that sometimes has roots in paganism or the Romantic desolation of sublime landscape .
