“Research shows that 90 percent of five-year olds are creative, but only 2 percent of adults are.” – Lee Lilber

Show Title: Wake Up Your Brain

Topics:

  • Waking Up Your Brain
  • Routine – specifically *upsetting* that routine
  • Automation – how the mind will automate
  • Creativity and “Closing Buttonholes”

Today's show largely inspired by:

Story in little book, “I Dare You”

· Professor couldn’t think right / buttonhole sewed shut by mistake by his daughter

· Fingers fumbled helplessly and when the eyes looked down…a new idea was born, or a new understanding of an old idea

· Professor discovered that fingers could remember

· He began playing pranks on his classes to facilitate thought in his students

Routine

· Mind is an “emergency organ”

· Relegates everything possible to automatic process – think buttoning your shirt

· It’s only when the order of things won’t work any longer that brain starts working again

· Your routine may be keeping you stupid

Buttonholes

· “Sew up some buttonholes in your life”

· Drive a different route home from work

· Read a book you would not normally read

· Write your name with the hand opposite your normal dominance

· Take some time to stop and help a stranded motorist

· Volunteer to help on a community project

What do you do to spur creativity?

What are you doing to prevent cognitive decline?

Jordan B Peterson & Jocko Willink talked about this when they were talking about chessmaster

· The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast - Season 4 Episode 13: Jocko Willink

The man in his +50s acknowledged that he had a disadvantage to the younger teenager

Exercise, muscle stress and cardiovascular exercise best for prevention of cognitive decline

We need to get healthy to take care of the ones we love

To be around to enjoy the life we are creating

Work on getting yourself better

Healthier

Physically, Mentally, Spiritually

You owe it to yourself to do so
