Welcome to Clairstone! In this episode, you will learn how to use the English words “Often” and “Compare.”
Transcript:
Hello everyone, my name is Jasmine, and you are listening to the English ClAIRSTONE Podcast, where you can build the cornerstone of your English vocabulary! For all our new listeners, welcome to the community, and for our regulars, hello again! Before we start, I will remind you that we upload new episodes twice a week and there are transcripts for each podcast episode in English, Arabic, and Spanish at our website projectclair.org, so go check that out if you want to follow along!

Today we will look at the words “often” and “compare.”

The word “often,” spelled O-F-T-E-N, is an adverb. An adverb is an adjective that describes a verb. The adverb “often” means something that happens or is done frequently or many times. For example, if Sara goes to dinner three times a month with her brother, then someone can say “Sarah goes to dinner with her brother often,” because she goes many times. Another example is if someone asks how “often” you walk your dog, they are asking how many times you walk your dog in a period of time.

The next word today, “compare,” is spelled C-O-M-P-A-R-E. The word “compare” is a verb that means to liken two things to each other. To “compare” is to set side by side things to show they are similar. The verb “compare” can also be used in a general way, to put things side by side and look closely at the qualities or traits in each thing. “Compare” can be used as a transitive verb in the sentence, “Larry is fast compared to me,” meaning that next to me, Larry is faster. As an intransitive verb, the word “compare” can be used in the sentence: “How can I compare to Alexa when they always get perfect scores?” In this example, I am putting Alexa and I side by side and asking how we could be seen as equal.

As a noun, the word “compare” is just the possibility of comparing or something to be compared to. An example sentence is, “Los Angeles is a city beyond compare,” meaning that no other city is like Los Angeles.

Well, that is it for today’s episode!
