And now to its token, over one hundred million DOT (106m, representing a whopping 9% of total supply) has been locked up for two years in order to lease out these first few slots. And with the extensive testing done on the Rococo testnet, all five parachains on Polkadot hit the ground running, producing blocks the moment that their slot went live.

Six further auctions are underway, which began on 23rd of December, 2021, and will finish on March 10th, 2022. According to Gavin Wood, barring any technical issues, auctions are to continue largely unabated for 2022.
