In the midst of all the change and disruption in the world, it can be easy to wonder “what in the world is going on?”

In the context of human history, we are a blip along the thousands (and thousands) of years. And yet all we know about human history is what’s happening to us right now, in the world.

So, I asked Nathaniel a question about human history. Here’s the jewel that comes from our conversation.

While the term, Maintenance Mindset, relates to many different fields, it was new to us in our conversation. However, a broad spectrum of industries uses this phrase to express different quality improvement and foundational improvements. Iron atoms were first forged in the heart of dying stars going supernova, and the only way that megafauna like humanity can evolve (to the best of our understanding) is by taking advantage of the structural integrity of iron atoms to carry oxygen, so in a very real way, we all breathe because of stars that lived and burned for millions of years and then died in a burst of light and fire that made the atoms we depend on.
