The anthropologist and archaeologist, Edgar L. Hewett, founded the School of American Archaeology in 1907. He also founded the Museum of New Mexico in 1909. Throughout his career he established a strong rapport with the Native American community. In 1921 he met with native dancers at the Fiesta de Santa Fe.
The San Ildefonso world-renowned potter, Maria Martinez, who was born in 1887 and died in 1980. In 1908 Edgar Lee Hewitt, the anthropologist/archeologist and founder of the Museum of New Mexico discovered Neolithic remnants from the time of the early inhabitant’s agricultural settlements. In his find he discovered the glossy decorative black pottery of that era. He sought the help of Maria in recreating this ancient form of pottery that led to Maria Martinez receiving the National Endowment of the Arts award, as well as many other honorifics in her lifetime.
