"Maple Syrup Tradition" w/ Billy Price co-hosting today. What a wonderful time to sit back and have a chat with one of my favorite brothers, Billy is up in Western NY and he has a family tradition of being outdoors. His grandfather was an Army Veteran, served in Korea and was declared "Missing in Action" during a fight where only 12-members returned. His grandfather got him started at a young age making maple syrup and Billy shares that passion passed on with us.
I came into this episode knowing Billy and that is it!! I love maple syrup, but knew very little about how it is made. From "sugar shacks", not the one up on North Shore where all teachers use to hangout either, this is where you boil the sap from Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) tree down to make the syrup. At this time of year, November, this is the time to stock that shack up and prepare to get to it. To get the sap, Billy goes out and "Taps" some trees, utilizing "Spiles" to funnel the sap into buckets. Collect this up 40 gallons of sap and you can make 1 gallon of Syrup!! Last year Billy and his family produced 50 gallons of syrup, that is a lot of work, but HMMMMM Good! Go out and give it a try, let us know how it goes.
