N. Jamiyla Chisholm was born in New York City and grew up in Brooklyn. She graduated from City College in New York City, received her master of arts in teaching from the University of Southern California, and received her MFA from the Writer’s Foundry at St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn. As a journalist, Jamiyla has written countless articles focused on culture, race, and women, and she has worked with numerous media companies and publications, including COLORLINES, Essence, TIME’S UP, VIBE, and The Source. Jamiyla is an avid traveler, runner, and language learner. She lives in Brooklyn with her cat Reesies. Jamiyla joins Rachel to discuss her brief but impactful time living in an Islamic commune in Brooklyn run by the infamous cult leader Dwight York. In this revealing conversation, as in her new book The Community, Ms. Chisholm utilizes her skills as an experienced journalist to provide Rachel with deep insights into her early life in this high-control group. Throughout the conversation, Jamilya explains the effects of the organization's family separation policy as Rachel offers her thoughts on the devastating nature of childhood neglect that's all too common in cultic groups. Before You Go: Rachel focuses further on Jamiyla's admission that as a child she felt somehow at fault for being separated from her mother, explaining the long-lasting feelings of helplessness and even inferiority that often accompany these types of neglect in early childhood.
