Ep. 1 Introduction - Back to Acadia, With California on My Mind
Manage episode 349200057 series 3424354
Introduction to the podcast and to me - 10 episodes touring 10 institutions in Moncton that the French have but nobody else does - this as a way of talking about bilingualism in New Brunswick over the past 50 years and the "cultural equality" we are supposed to have post Crown v. Beaulac (1999) - Me? Masters at McGill in Political Science, a PhD at Columbia and then a couple of decades teaching history of American constitutional theory at UCLA - broke by the woke wars, this podcast is how I look at New Brunswick now that I am back home after that. I survey the dominant "progressive" viewpoint on bilingualism via Graham Fraser's Sorry, I Don't Speak French, defend my focus on the French/English thang.
This podcast is a response to Cedric Doucet of SNA who wants more English feedback about bilingualism - he thinks that there is consent for bilingualism - I am more sceptical - how do you tell actual consent from just being checked-out, disenfranchised, no-platformed, cowed-into-submission etc.? For example the hysterical Acadian reaction to Kris Allen on the bilingualism review panel, the review of the official languages act, how unfair the background conditions are - the Official Languages Commissioner - Agent of Inequality or protector of minority rights? - the goal of this podcast - explain Acadian ideology to non French speakers and non French speaker objections to French people.
