Science-fiction may be a niche genre but it has forever inspired filmmakers to stretch the limits of reality to deliver unimaginable worlds and concepts on screen. Picture post-apocalyptic worlds where artificial intelligence dominates the human race or even the ability to transcend time and space to discover an existence never imagined possible. Foundation

Foundation is an American sci-fi drama 2021 television series created by David S Goyer, based on the series of books written by Isaac Asimov. The story is based on a professor who discovers a way to predict the future. He realizes that the future does not hold good for his galaxy and tying up with a band of exiles he sets out to save it from imminent danger.

Season 1 of the show was a hit that Apple TV+ renewed for season 2.

The Martian

The Martian is a 2015 sci-fi movie based on the book with the same name by Andy Weir. The movie is all about an astronaut Mark Watney who gets stranded on Mars while on a mission after his crew leaves, presuming him to be dead. The story narrates his struggle to sustain himself with limited resources until he manages to get help. The movie was appreciated for its scientific accuracy and realistic depiction.

2001: A Space Odyssey

This 1968 sci-fi movie is based on the novel by Arthur C Clarke. The story is a tale of an epic voyage undertaken by a crew of astronauts along with their revolutionary supercomputer set out to trace the extraterrestrial monolith on the lunar surface. This one’s considered one of the best sci-fi movies ever made and should be on your binge-list if you’re a fan of the genre.

Blade Runner

Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, released in 1982, is a noir-cyberpunk movie based on the novel Do Androids Dream of electric sheep? By Philip K Dick. The movie stars Harrison Ford as a police officer who’s assigned to hunt down four genetically engineered humans. The film was initially met with mixed reviews and bombed at the box-office, but has since gone on to be regarded as one of the best films ever made. The sequel titled Blade Runner 2049 starring Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling, directed by Denis Villeneuve, was also released to a lukewarm reception at the box office in 2017, despite garnering rave reviews from the critics. Scott, who made the 1982 cult classic, pinned the sequel’s failure on the film’s excessive runtime.

The Expanse

This American sci-fi television series is based on the novels of the same name by James S A Corey. The series is set 200 years in the future where humanity has colonized the solar system. Driven by geopolitics and an inter-planetary setting, the series also delves into the relationship that nations would share in the future. SFX fans are in for a treat but this one also packs a compelling story to keep you hooked through the series.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

This 2005 sci-fi comedy flick is based on a series of novels of the same name by Douglas Adams. The story is based on a character called Arthur Dent who has an alien friend called Ford Prefect. When Ford warns that the Earth is to be demolished by a race called Vogons, the duo set out on an expedition to work on their guide to the galaxy. The movie has a promising cast including Martin Freeman, Yasiin Bey and Sam Rockwell.
