The prosecution in Italy of oil and gas giants Shell and Eni over allegations of bribery in a $1.3 billion Nigerian oil-license deal had all the makings of a Hollywood blockbuster: oil executives, Nigerian politicians, middlemen and a former justice minister. But movie never made it to our screens, with the prosecutor assigned to handle the appeal pulling the plug on the case. Now, anti-bribery campaigners are saying that the dramatic collapse of the prosecution has undermined Italy’s international anti-bribery obligations.
