On paper, there’s plenty for privacy advocates to celebrate in Google’s announcement that it will gradually change the access to personal data available to apps on its Android platform. Others may also be encouraged to hear that Google’s approach will be more collaborative and deliberate than Apple’s. Yet the prospect of a tech company that relies on personal data to power its advertising setting rules for what data should be available to third-party app developers will lead to delicate privacy and antitrust scrutiny.
