In a culture of affluence, gifts seem to pop up everywhere. As Christmas approaches, retailers might pitch a "free gift with purchase" to increase spending. You might be the recipient of a last-minute Christmas gift or a white elephant gift at your work Christmas party. Those Rudolf reindeer slippers were exactly what you wanted! Right!?!?
We should appreciate any gift we receive, but there's a key element missing from these free gifts: Love. A gift of love isn't given by a retailer. A gift of love isn't found in a last-minute obligation. A gift of love isn't found at a work Christmas party. A gift of love is often displayed before the gift is given. Gifts of love often appear in well-planned sacrifice, not from last-minute affluence.
