Den italienske operatonsättaren Ruggero Leoncavallo började sina musikaliska studier vid 11 års ålder.
1882 flyttade han till Paris, där han levde ett bohemiskt liv. Han försörjde sig på pianolektioner och cafékonserter. 1890 tog Leoncavallo stort intryck av Mascagnis opera På Sicilien och två år senare gjorde hans egen veristiska opera Pajazzo stor succé i Milano. Det var Leoncavallo som först kommit med idén att göra opera av Scènes de la vie de Bohème av Murger, men Leoncavallos La bohème har hamnat i skuggan av Puccinis opera med samma namn.
