Affiliate marketing has changed dramatically for both brands and their affiliates. Those who have kept pace with the changing landscape have enjoyed spectacular rewards. Does that describe your brand’s performance?
If your affiliate revenue could use a hype, then invest 20 minutes to listening to this edition of the Chaos Makes Sense podcast, where host Kimberly Henrie interviews two industry leaders, Matt Frary, CEO of the leading outsourced affiliate agency SmarterChaos and James Martell, recognized affiliate marketing pioneer and founder of The School of Internet Marketing about Affiliate Summit, which kicks off on January 12 at the beautiful Paris Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
As Matt points out, Americans faced two holidays back to back and what better way to kick off the New Year than with a conference. The SmarterChaos offices are living up to their name as things are crazy with wrapping up 2013 and getting ready for this event.
If You Aren’t Attending Affiliate Summit then You’re Missing Out
Matt and James agree that they get more done when they prepare to go out of town. They give some hard suggestions of lists they tackle both when preparing for the conference and what to do while attending, as well as some of the other benefits and what they will enjoy in the off hours.
This segues into a short discussion where Matt and James reflect on their years of experience as they answer a question about how these types of conferences can help you market your business and strengthen your brand.
A conference is all about who you know, and Matt shares how this applies to conferences he has attended from an agency and marketer’s perspective. James chimes in, agreeing with Matt’s thoughts and adding information of his own. The two point out benefits of conferences for new affiliates, sharing concrete examples of life-changing events of some of their peers.
Regardless if you are new to the industry or have been going to conferences for years, attending Affiliate Summit offers something for every level of affiliate marketer.
Making the Most of Attending an Affiliate Marketing Conference
Affiliate Summit is the most important conference for the affiliate marketing industry. It happens twice a year, once in the Western area of the United States (Las Vegas), and once on the East Coast. However there are several conferences that can benefit affiliates and Matt and James agree that attending them should be a priority for anyone in the industry. Some of the ones they discuss include:
This leads the two men to share benefits of attending niche conferences dealing with industry specifics such as social media or daily deals, as well as local conferences geared toward a specific geographic area. The two men agree that if an affiliate looked deep enough, they could find a couple of conferences each weekend.
Planning to Make the Most of a Conference
James attended his first conference in 2002 and he has since attended events with audiences that range from a few hundred to several thousand people. Attending a conference can be overwhelming for a newcomer, but he highly recommends looking at what the conference offers and making a plan ahead of time to make it a positive experience.
For example, set up all meetings ahead of time to avoid wasting time looking for specific people in a sea of faces. Matt adds in tips for using tools like Outlook, a cell phone, or an iPad to communicate until both parties reach the designated area. He also offers tips for using technology to stay on schedule throughout the conference.
Although it is impossible to attend every meeting during the conference, it is not necessary to fill every spot in the schedule. Matt offers why he sometimes attends random meetings, and the benefit of leaving some spots completely open in the schedule.
The episode wraps up with Matt sharing a few affiliate programs that really excite him. He shares details about two specific companies, OpenMe.com and Threadless.com, and offers tips for how they could bring traffic to your site.
Invest 20 minutes now and learn why you should attend Affiliate Summit or any other number of industry conferences. You won’t regret it.
