What Does The Fourth Quarter Mean For Online Businesses?

Matt begins the episode by stating he wanted to talk about creating a strategy that is actionable. Although there is some seasonality, that can be different between industries, the fourth quarter can generally account for up to 80% of all online sales.

Despite the start of this quarter has already passed, Matt claims there is still an opportunity to create a strategy. It is especially important to include your affiliates in any plans you have no matter what channels you are focusing on.

There are several important special shopping days approaching including free Shipping Day, Cyber Monday and Black Friday. These are in addition to the holidays such as Halloween, New Year, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The first thing you need to do it put these dates on a promotional calendar. Then you need to look at your sales channels and develop a strategy. Matt states, if he didn’t have a plan right now, he would be burning the midnight oil to write one. He thinks writing a plan on paper is important because it makes it more likely that you will implement it.

The Season Sales In Numbers

Matt goes on to reveal that 35% of all purchases will be made via a mobile device. He also states that year-on-year, the 2013 sales showed there were 10.3% more online purchases than in 2012. This is because customers are becoming happier with the technology and process of online stores and retailers are adopting the technology better.

Matt expects that the results will be similar this year.

There is also the discussion of what goods will do well. In 2013, 46% of all the online purchases were for home goods. 14.7% of all online sales were related to health and beauty and apparel took 10% of all online sales. Matt suggests these will be the winners again this year.
