This week, we are continuing our conversation on the Fair Housing Amendments Act. We're covering the Federal Fair Housing Amendments Act that has established people with disabilities as a protected class that's applicable to all 50 states.
Just to give you a little bit of context, the Fair Housing Act was passed in 1968. At that time, there were no components for people with disabilities. It only had protected classes based on race, gender, and marital status, and it prohibited discriminatory renting and housing practices by private and public entities.
In this episode, you will hear:
- An overview of the Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988
- The basis of the foundation of all private housing in the nation
- Establishing people with disabilities as a protected class
- Being discriminatory by the design of the built environment
- Accessibility requirements on covered multifamily dwellings and effectivity dates
- Units covered by the Fair Housing Act
