Mercury is in retrograde and we’re all feeling it…
Em, Al and Xanthe are in the studio today - and we’re gonna be honest… it was a little hard for us to find goods for this week’s GBA. Al’s been getting violent at the dentist and Em’s household has been hit by the flu.
We also dive into the conversations that have been opened up in the mainstream in the wake of the Netflix show Adolescence - which follows the story of a 13 year old boy who is arrested for the murder of a girl in his school. We discuss the rise of online misogyny, how it’s affecting young boys and what hope we have of stopping it.
This conversation does discuss plot points from Adolescence - but if you haven’t seen it - the conversation mainly focuses on the issues the show brings up rather than the details of the plot. It won’t ruin the show, but you may get more from this conversation if you’ve seen at least the first two episodes of the series.

The Netflix show Adolescence opened up the conversation about male violence and the radicalisation of young boys online into the mainstream. But how much do we really know about what young boys are viewing online and the effect is has on them? This week, we're joined by someone whose work has shaped the conversation around gender, power, and the internet for over a decade - writer, activist, and founder of the Everyday Sexism Project, Laura Bates. We were so thrilled to welcome Laura back on the podcast to talk about her brand new book, The New Age of Sexism - an examination of how misogyny is evolving in the digital age. We spoke to her in light of the rise in incel culture, the mainstreaming of online radicalisation, and the links between toxic masculinity and real-world male violence, This conversation touches on some upsetting themes - specifically violence against women and sexual abuse. But Laura gives us practical advice on a personal and policy level to help us eradicate this new wave of gendered hate. We learned so much from this conversation and we hope you will too. This week, we’re discussing all things adulthood: the good, the bad, and the “oh god, no one’s coming to rescue me.” From the never-ending responsibilities to the realisation that the buck officially stops with you , we’re discussing all what it's like to be a responsible adult (spoiler: it’s exhausting) We’re also reminding ourselves - and you - why it’s so important to prioritise yourself. Al’s long-overdue facial is officially on the agenda. Plus, we dive into a listener email with a relationship dilemma and do our best to offer some honest advice (with minimal chaos). What would you do if you got stuck in a cave? Cave diving is something that has fascinated - and terrified - us for a long time - and today we had the opportunity to get all our questions answered by acclaimed explorer and cave diver - Rannvá Jørmundsson. Rannvá has a background as a professional diving instructor, specialising in cold water. Rannvá is originally from the Faroe Islands, but currently lives in Cornwall, where she works for the diving equipment company Fourth Element. Rannva has been diving since 2008 and is an IDC Staff instructor and full cave CCR diver, and she is a member of the Explorers Club in New York. Rannvá told us all about her passion for diving, how she feels it's the best form of mediation and also how she uses her extensive training to handle the risks and dangers involved in cave exploration. Stay tuned to find out if she can convince us to take a dive... Al (aka Revolting Santa Claus) has come into the studio today armed with many, many, many awkwards for us. We also pull back the curtain a bit and read some of your comments on our latest episodes… turns out, we’re VERY responsive to feedback. It really does help us out if you rate and follow the show on your podcast platforms - so we’d LOVE it if you could leave us a good review if you love the show! Five stars pretty pleeeeeeasseeee! And we also chat about Al’s recent experience of being turned into a deepfake - and what it tells us about the fragility of women’s reputations in comparison to men - particularly in light of Russell Brand’s recent rape and sexual assault charges. When it comes to IVF - the narrative can often be to keep going and going, and going until you have a baby. Sometimes, however, the more sensible decision is to stop - and that is what was right for Anna Hart and her husband. Anna is content creator, interiors planner and digital strategist. After starting her IVF journey during lockdown, and after three unsuccessful rounds - they made the decision to stop. This is a side of the IVF conversation we don’t often hear about - Anna tells us about what she went through and how she has found happiness after coming out the other side of IVF without a baby. We’re talking Ozempic, again. Our deep dive into body image may have wrapped up last week, but we all know this topic is far from over. So, we’re jumping back in… This time, we’re joined by influencer and longtime friend of the podcast, Sasha Pallari. After hearing our Ozempic episode, she reached out to share her own experience with Mounjaro — a journey she’s been candid about online over the past four months. In this conversation, Sasha opens up about why she chose to take the drug, how its impact goes beyond just weight loss, and where she sees potential dangers. Sasha offers us her unique perspective on the drug - how it has changed her life and why she has chosen to be so open and honest about it online. Follow @sashapallari on Instagram You can listen to Sasha’s podcast Spill which she co-hosts with Billie Bhatia wherever you get your podcasts! Throughout our body image series - we’ve had so many powerful, inspiring and life-affirming conversations with people who have incredible advice on how we can build better relationships with our bodies. One of those people is Alice Liveing. Alice is a personal trainer, influencer, columnist, podcaster and bestselling author who has inspired thousands of people with her relatable, motivational and balanced health advice. In this conversation, we take a look back to the 2010s - when she inadvertently became the poster girl for so-called “clean eating”. We found out how Alice found herself in that situation and what led her to move away from it to build a healthy relationship with her body image. If you want to hear our full investigation of wellness - you can listen to our episode ‘The “Wellness” Rebrand’ which is available now. We’ve downed tools - because it’s time to reflect on everything that we’ve learned and felt throughout our big body image series. Join Em and Al to discuss what we’ve learned through this series - from the history of diet culture to the way the diet landscape is shifting and morphing in front of our eyes. We chat about where we’re at with our own body image journeys, how we’re going to move forward from this series, and how we might be able to - as a society - fix our relationships with our bodies. Thank you to our brilliant listeners who sent us their voice notes for this episode - we couldn't feature all of them in this episode but we loved listening to them all. A special thanks to: Sophie, Jessica, Marsy, Hannah, Riss, Aimee, Eimear and Catherine from the IVF BFF Podcast If you want to dig further into diet culture, self-acceptance and making peace with your body - Alex’s book You Are Not A Before Picture is available now. It’s time to address the elephant in the room - Ozempic. We know that Ozempic will change - and is already changing - the body image landscape. There is so much noise online, in the media and in our personal lives about the so called ‘miracle’ drug - so we decided to call in the help of an expert, to clear up the myths from the facts. Dr Giles Yeo is a professor at the University of Cambridge, whose research focuses on food intake, genetics and obesity. We got him in the studio to answer all the questions we had about Ozempic - to help us understand the science behind the drug that everyone is talking about. The body image landscape is changing in front of our eyes - and we have Ozempic to blame - or thank - for that. For the last few years - Ozempic has been the topic that has dominated the cultural conversation. Is it the silver bullet to help us with our body image or are pharmaceutical companies taking advantage of our collective desire to be thin? In this episode we speak to a doctor who is an expert on Ozempic, a psychologist and someone who has taken the drug to dig right to the core of this thorny, controversial topic. Is Ozempic a miracle or is it causing more damage than it’s worth? We don’t know where it’s going to end - but we know for certain that this isn’t the last we’ll hear of the drug. And what happens when the movement that made you feel better about your body shifts to a position you no longer align with? Stephanie Yeboah is a content creator, author and journalist - and we spoke to her as part of our exploration of the body positivity movement. It was a movement that she was closely associated with, but one that she has moved away from in recent years. It’s within those, after all, that we really made our names. Today, we’re taking you back to the inception of the body positive movement, which started by and for plus-size black women. In this episode, we dive into how the movement has changed beyond recognition - and where its future may lie. Should I Delete That?

The 2010s is a time we have come to think of as the ‘wellness’ rebrand. The era in which we declared that we wanted to be ‘strong not skinny’ and that we discarded what we now thought of as ‘fad’ diets and traded them in for consistent ‘healthy’ living. Skin and bones were out, toned arms, visible abs and curves in all the right places were in. Today we’re investigating if by replacing thinness as the thing to which we should aspire to with “healthy”, many of us fell into a false sense of healing, not realising how unhealthy our new and ‘healthy’ habits really were….
