The Vietnam War was a prolonged conflict that took place in Southeast Asia, specifically in what is currently Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, from 1955 to 1975. It was fought between the communist government of North Vietnam and the government of South Vietnam, which was supported by the United States and other anti-communist allies. The war was part of the larger Cold War conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States.

The objectives of the Vietnam War varied depending on the country and group involved. North Vietnam sought to reunify the country under a communist government, while the United States and its allies aimed to prevent the spread of communism in Southeast Asia. The conflict was also driven by Cold War tensions and geopolitical interests, as well as by domestic political considerations in the United States and Vietnam.

The United States became involved in the Vietnam War in the early 1960s, providing military and financial aid to the South Vietnamese government. Over the next decade, the conflict escalated, with the United States and its allies committing hundreds of thousands of troops to the conflict.

The North Vietnamese Army (NVA) used a variety of tactics during the Tet Offensive in 1968. The NVA launched coordinated surprise attacks across multiple cities and towns in South Vietnam, catching the South Vietnamese and American forces off guard. They infiltrated into urban areas by disguising themselves as civilians, using secret tunnels, and hiding in plain sight. The NVA used large numbers of troops to overwhelm the defenders in a series of human wave attacks. They employed guerrilla tactics such as hit-and-run attacks, booby traps, and snipers to disrupt the defenders and cause chaos. The NVA used the offensive as a propaganda tool to show the people of South Vietnam that the communist forces were capable of attacking even the most heavily defended areas and used psychological operations to demoralize the defenders by spreading rumors and false information. The NVA aimed to seize and hold territory in urban areas, which would demonstrate their military strength and create a political crisis for the South Vietnamese government.

South Vietnamese and American forces quickly deployed reinforcements to areas under attack to bolster defenses and push back the attackers. The defenders used heavy firepower, including artillery, airstrikes, and helicopter gunships, to destroy enemy positions and suppress the attackers. In urban areas, South Vietnamese and American troops engaged in intense house-to-house fighting to clear enemy forces from buildings and streets. The defenders worked closely with intelligence agencies to track down enemy infiltrators and sleeper cells and disrupt their activities. They used psychological operations to counter the enemy's propaganda and boost morale among South Vietnamese civilians and troops. The defenders prioritized the defense of key areas such as government buildings, military bases, and communication centers. South Vietnamese civilians were encouraged to assist the defenders by providing information, food, and medical aid.
