In this the first episode of the Bushcraft Radio podcast we interview Paul Kirtley about his life and passion for the outdoors.
Paul is on a personal mission to help others interested in the outdoors to become in
his own words " more competent rounded outdoors people who respect the natural
environments they visit "
Paul describes his start in the Bushcraft industry as a humble beginning, not knowing
even the basics of how to set up a website or register a domain or get along with the
internet, his Bushcraft of course were at this time legendary.
Within a short space of time his media outings became listed as top ranking his Blog
earning him the Go outdoors award in 2018.
Outdoor life for Paul has become a passion having turned what started out as a
hobby and a passion has become a full time profession since 2005, He is fully
invested in the life of continuous development of outdoor Bushcraft and survival skills
taking particular care to pass these skills on others.
Pauls primary focus is Bushcraft, Paul started teaching for Ray Mears on his courses
at the Woodlore school in 2003, in the beginning this was a part time job but very
quickly this became full time as Paul was offered the role of course director a
position he took for five years.
The wider world was calling and Paul decided to start out on his own, alongside skills
courses Paul developed this into trips and expeditions and his own website the drive
to help others get the most out their outdoor life remaining at the fore front.
Paul produces a prolific amount of content, written articles, tutorials , photoblogs and
trip reports, Youtube videos and audio podcasts, this might seem to be such a wide
and varying approaches and styles but this has been well received, what you can
gain from Paul and what clearly comes across from talking to him is the true passion
that lies behind and that he is willing to share his experience and his experience with
others.
Paul encourages people in the wider community to engage with him and has had
such an enormous response that the comments themselves have become a unique
knowledge base.
Alongside bushcraft Paul has become a qualified Canoe leader and Mountain
Leader, looking through the lense of bushcraft out into nature he has gained a wider
insight into the world that surrounds us, sometimes feeling disconnected he quickly
discovered that when he utilised a campfire He felt more connected, he still likes to
connect by foot but also through his water borne journeys all of this comes across in
our interview.
Survival interested has followed him since his early teens which he used to underpin
his skills and lead him to the trekking journeys he undertook in his early 20s.
Paul says that team leading is never easy or as straightforward as one imagined but
the challenge and having the chance to work alongside very talented aspiring
instructors taught him a lot of the skills he put into practise later when starting his
own business.
