In the past week, the FDA gave approval for the latest COVID-19 vaccine from Johnson & Johnson. It's the third COVID vaccine to be approved. The first two were from Pfizer and Moderna and were mRNA vaccines. This one is different.
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is what is called a viral vector vaccine. It uses an adenovirus, which is modified with DNA to place the spike protein of the coronavirus in the cell, and then it is delivered through injection. There are several vaccines that have been under development using this format.
The advantages of the vaccine are that it does not have to be frozen like the others. It is easier to transport, and it requires only one dose. The company is proud of the vaccine, but it is not really advertising how the vaccine is made.
The New Orleans Archdiocese and the Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission have both spoken out about the moral issue surrounding the vaccine. It's not that they are against COVID vaccines. They are just against the vaccines that are derived from aborted fetal tissue.
Johnson & Johnson used a cell called PER.C6, which is derived from an 18-week old aborted fetus' retinal tissue. Many will argue that it's not the "original" cells that are being used, but the truth is that a child was aborted and is being used to develop medical devices for public health.
Jared explains how he is pro-life, perhaps one of the most pro-life people in existence. Many will argue that this vaccine will help public health, but does that make it acceptable since it came through abortion? Jared is not advocating against all vaccines or for a boycott of Johnson & Johnson. He simply encourages his readers to research and pray about this vaccine. He shares that he would take another vaccine before he would this one from a moral perspective.
