Episode 108: Clive Tyldesley

This week, The Michael Anthony Show has reached the promised land, with one of the greatest football commentators of all time diving deep into the beautiful game in Episode 108. Recognisable to many ears as perhaps the prominent sporting voice of the past generation, Tyldesley offers a fascinating insight into life in the gantry, a journey that has seen him narrate us through over twenty European Cup and five World Cup finals.

Possessing an unrivalled collection of first hand footballing anecdotes, the encyclopedic and open broadcaster discusses a wide array of intriguing topics, ranging from the erratic Brian Clough, the commercial rise of the English game, his recent setback in being replaced as ITV's main man and the changing face of media, the beauty of Messi and Ronaldo, the ever disappointing English national team and many more.

The Treble game of 1999 and Istanbul 2005 are just two of the iconic events in which Tyldesley has acted as our verbal guide and this role has not come without its unique pressures, many of which are dealt with by the man whose words have become immortalised in many of Britain's footballing cathedrals, throughout the show.

The role is of a commentator exceeds football. Their voices allow us to travel back in time and on many occasions the phrasing that they adopt can live longer in the souls of fans than the action itself. Clive Tyldesley maintains that people do not go to a film for the soundtrack, but not even Hollywood would have the audacity to have Manchester United score. Even if they did always score.
