Episode 71: The Murder of Melissa Benoit

Join Katie and Liz on this week's episode of True Crime New England as they visit the small town of Kingston, Massachusetts in the late summer of 1990. 13-year-old Melissa Benoit, an eighth grade girl who was described as being friendly and soft-spoken, went missing as she was walking home from a friend's house. It is theorized that she stopped to visit the grave of her father, who had died a year prior. The whole town was on high alert, and the FBI even came in to help with the search. After 11 days, Melissa's badly beaten body was discovered buried crudely in the dirt basement of her neighbor, Henry Meinholz. The proceeding trial involved Meinholz pleading not guilty by reason of insanity, which did not hold up in court, and led to his conviction and subsequent life sentence in prison.
