Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844–89) was an English poet, educated at Oxford. Entering the Roman Catholic Church in 1866 and the Jesuit novitiate in 1868, he was ordained in 1877. Upon becoming a Jesuit he burned much of his early verse and abandoned the writing of poetry. However, the sinking in 1875 of a German ship carrying five Franciscan nuns, exiles from Germany, inspired him to write one of his most impressive poems “The Wreck of the Deutschland.” Thereafter he produced his best poetry, in ...

In this 5 minute podcast, Gerard talks about how everyone utilises marketing on a surface level from day to day basis without realising that there is much more to marketing than meets the eye. Using the marketing framework AIDA (Awareness, Interest, Desire & Action), Gerard breaks down the common mistake of focusing only on driving awareness to com…

Tomorrow, December 1 marks the 25th anniversary of Latrell Sprewell's attempted strangulation of coach PJ Carlesimo. My apologies as I tried to find a good photo of Spree and PJ together but all I found was watermarked / lo-res garbage, so you'll have to settle for a pic of a highly medicated Calvin Klein being separated from Spree at Madison Squar…

with the arrival of episode 130, I am reminded that a large percentage of the program's listeners are either in transit today or feverishly preparing a family meal of some sort, and in either instance, I can think of no better musical/conversational accompaniment than 2 + hours of me moaning into your ear about how very difficult my past week was a…

as we hit episode 129, I’ll share a little personal note that sometimes I am asked what exactly is it I hope to accomplish with this program. To which I can only reply, would you ask Marshall Applewhite (or his QB son Major) what they hoped to accomplish? Would you ask Marie Curie (or her daughter Cherie) what they hoped to accomplish? Maybe the fu…

There's an old baseball adage that claims the key to successful club management is keeping the players that hate you away from those who are undecided. The same could be said of keeping persons who hate Queensryche's 'Operation : MIndcrime' and W*A*S*P*'s 'The Crimson Idol' (ie. me) away from those who attempt to determine which was better (ie. Bla…

These are confusing times, to say the least (Cronos in Trenton NJ) voice. If I turn on the television, I can either pick a spirited debate about Kyrie Irving’s YouTube recommendations, a panel discussion about who was the worst Nixon Richard, Mojo or Dale, or most confusingly of all, a gang of thugs labeling Coronation Street’s Peter Barlow, “The W…

In this podcast, Gerard talks about the idea people often believe that, 'the perfect product will sell itself'. Using the market introduction of sliced bread as an example, Gerard expands on the importance of market positioning and realigning to ensure that your product, no matter how perfect, is marketed correctly and to the right people.…

for episode 126, it’s time to celebrate my favorite week on the musical calendar as we preview the annual Austin edition of the Levitation Festival. As always, it’s an absolute musical embarrassment ….OF RICHES, my friends. Why are there only 4 appearances by the Osees? Why not 40? Are 2 nights really enough for King Gizzard Lizard Wizard Dairy Que…

In this podcast, Gerard from Fractal discusses the importance of understanding and knowing what to prioritise when it comes to marketing in the context of your business goals and time frame. Through the lens of Gerard’s years of experience in SEO he emphasises the fact that businesses and founders should be validating if investing time and money ea…

Given that this week’s program features a selection from Jerome Cooper’s 1979 one-man percussion opus ‘The Unpredictability Of Predictability’, I asked my producer to arrange for an interview with an expert on private press recordings. Trouble is, he misheard me and thought I said PRIMATE PRESS and instead called the Kyoto University Press Tour who…

Gerard from Fractal goes into great detail explaining the Danny Kruger effect and how this effect seeps into the marketing and business world. He outlines the importance for Founders and Business owners to be proactive and vet so-called “experts” through acknowledging their background and experience rather than trusting what is being said at face v…

there was a lot of discussion online yesterday yesterday about a cancelled EU tour by A.C. which to be perfectly frank, surprised me because if you cannot make a Seth Putnam hologram work out financially, I don’t know what hope there is for holograms of anyone else. I do have a bit of experience in this realm having attempted to mount a hologram to…

Often marketers get a bad rap as a result of the belief that they are good at convincing people to do things they don't want to do. However, good marketing is about driving change and making people aware of better alternatives. If done correctly, marketing can help improve people's lives by providing quality efficiency and better outcomes. In this …

for episode 123, I have attempted to determine exactly what was happening on this day nearly 15 years ago when a south austin party store advertised the appearance of LIMPY THE CLOWN with some sort of vampire motif. For all this time I have not been able to reconcile whether Limpy was a clown, a vampire, a combination of both or perhaps the proximi…

In this episode of the 5-minute podcasts, Gerard from Fractal explains the challenges when facing social media and trying to stand out from the crowd. Through examples and experience working with start-up companies. Gerard describes the importance of audience engagement and listening to customers, rather than being one of the many businesses who ar…

Greeetings everyone and welcome to episode 122 of my favorite online radio show (and perhaps yours as well). This week we’re in the midst of Harry Styles’ sold old six-night stand at the new basketball arena (which is a pretty neat trick considering Austin doesn’t even have an NBA team — why don’t we build an Olympic velodrome while we’re at it?). …

In this podcast, Gerard from Fractal talks about the importance of properly positioning your company in a way that delivers a concise and direct message towards your customers. He discusses the fluffy style of marketing that has seen recent uptake which in turn has now left customers confused. Leaving them to try to sift through vast amounts of inf…

Episode 121 neatly coincides with the eve of the 19th edition of Memphis TN's venerable Goner Fest and in true investigative journalist/podcast-crusader fashion, I have dove head first in the murky waters that constitute Goner's annual failure to secure the services of THE DOG POLICE for their otherwise otherworldly multi-day event. I'm sure it's t…

occasionally, i make a mistake or two on the program. Maybe I accidentally leave the microphone on when I’m yelling at children (someone else’s — they’re a couple of houses away but if I don’t speak up they’re gonna grow up to be total shits). Perhaps I’ll mispronounce a name or a title (apologies to former Canadiens/Avalanche netminder Patrick Roy…

Just like all thumbs are fingers but, not all fingers are thumbs. All advertising is marketing but, not all marketing is advertising. In this short 5-minute podcast, Gerard from Fractal dissects the crucial details between properly defining what is advertising and what is marketing. Gerard delves into the importance of marketing and not pigeon holi…

I think we can all agree there was only one Wayne Static, even if some of us occasional get him mixed up with the guy from Drowning Pool (there's only one of him too, though if I were to google his name I might learn he's been cloned). I can't remember which sports pundit with the extremely punchable face (ie. all of them) opined some years ago tha…

episode 118 premieres this morning with all the fanfare you’d associate with a a carefully crafted non-apology / apology composed by the crisis management team of Muffy and Missy McGlugglug - offspring of the late music industry public relations legend Drinky McGlugglug killed in 2009 during a hostage situation at OddBins (after 2 hours in captivit…

Expanding on the nuances of podcasting, Gerard goes into further detail showcasing the many …

let those who matter to you know it while you can, when you can. If you’re too shy or embittered to manage i, that’s alright, too. Maybe you’ve got boxes of stuff you can argue with. Normal programming will resume next week most likely, at which time there will be an introductory announcement that is either 100% hyperbolic or seeks to avenge some s…

Siempre que el hombre pone sus ideas en el lugar que le corresponde a Dios, siempre que sigue tercamente sus propios métodos, está en camino de caer en la condición de un corazón petrificado, una conciencia insensible y unos ojos ciegos.על ידי Pastor Gerardo Ampie

if you’ll allow me to put on my investigative journalism cap for a momement (not unlike the one Jim Belushi is sporting in this still from Oliver Stone’s “Salvador”, another example of reporters operating under great pressure), I have decided this week to tackle a question that has most likely been plaguing each and every one of you. WHAT THE FUCK …

For the few of you who didn’t catch the news late Monday night, my ben white blvd storage container was the subject of an (UNANNOUNCED) federal search and seizure. Unlike another raid that took place some 1300 miles east, I would like to assure my friends and associates that I am cooperating 100%, no 110% with this investigation. When the dust clea…

so i hope we know each other well enough that i can confide in you a weird, reoccurring dream I have every year around the end of July/start of August. I’m standing on the infield grass at Citi Field and I’m crying. Sobbing, uncontrollably. I’ve been told I’ve been traded and I don’t want to go. And I’m wailing away out there for the entire world t…

welcome to episode 113 of the program fig 1 : rules for entry to Lawrence’s pad (taken from ‘Lawrence Of Belgravia’, 2011, Paul Kelly), almost word for word the same sign I’ve had posted above my front door since moving to Austin some 18 years ago (there’s a few minor changes, see below). It’s worked out almost as well for me as it has for Lawrence…

the cover of the new issue of Time Magazine declares “INTO THE METAVERSE : The Next Digital Era Will Change Everything”, to which I can only say I sure as fuck hope so because the current digital era BLOWS. I had a series of meetings with a gang of Austin tech pencil necks who devised a scheme in which this show would jettison the tired, played-out…
