In most cases the scammer finds an elderly person who is in ill health. They try to find out if the elderly person has any relatives living nearby. If not, they gradually do everything they can to gain the person’s trust. After a while they try to get the elderly person to give their power of attorney over to them. They will then have everything necessary to drain their bank account and even sometimes to sell their house.

I get calls from spammers and scammers (just like everyone else), but (unlike most) I answer them and talk for as long as I can. I figure if they're busy trying to dupe me they're not duping somebody else. I also find the practice despicable so wasting their time gives me some personal satisfaction.
