An Australian doctor treating patients in northern Gaza has described the conditions he's working in as catastrophic. Dr Wajid Khan says he has "lost a lot of patients ... with blast injuries" in the past two days with medication for pain relief in short supply as Israel continues its air strikes in the strip. The Israeli military says its forces have resumed ground operations in the central and southern Gaza Strip, as a second day of air strikes killed dozens of Palestinians, according to local health workers. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the latest air strikes in Gaza won't stop until all Israeli hostages are released and the militant group Hamas is destroyed. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described a phone call with US President Donald Trump overnight as "positive", "frank", and "very substantive". It's the first conversation between the two leaders since last month's tense Oval Office meeting and comes a day after Mr Trump's 90-minute phone call with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. And the Trump administration has released tens of thousands of pages of previously unseen documents relating to the assassination of former President John F Kennedy in 1963. Donald Trump had made a campaign promise to release the files — containing around 63,000 pages — despite persistent refusals from previous presidents including Joe Biden and Barack Obama. Over 400 people have died after following air strikes from Israel in Gaza, according to local health authorities in the war-torn territory. The Israeli military says the air strikes will continue for as long as necessary and has even flagged a potential return of Israeli ground troops. Meanwhile, the White House says US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to seek a limited ceasefire against energy and infrastructure targets in the Russia-Ukraine war, following a phone call lasting at least 90 minutes. The White House has described the pause as the first step in a “movement to peace” it hopes will eventually lead to a full and lasting end to the fighting. Also, the federal government has lodged diplomatic protests with China after two prominent Hong Kong pre-democracy activists were targeted by what appears to be attempts to intimidate and silence them on Australian soil. In South Australia, a pamphlet was sent to Adelaide mosques which claimed to be from a local lawyer who was pro-Israel and wanted to "wage war against Islamic terrorism." And Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has suggested holding a referendum to allow dual nationals - who break the law - to have their citizenship stripped by ministers, prompting some on his own side of politics to call it a "very bad" and "insane idea". It's part of the Coalition's plan to toughen the requirements for Australian citizenship, but in 2022, the High Court found only judges should have the power to decide whether to strip someone's citizenship if they have not faced trial in Australia. Jim Chalmers will use a speech today to argue the tariffs are both 'senseless and wrong'. It comes as he prepares for his fourth budget right before the upcoming federal election. Also, the Australian Peacekeeper and Peacemaker Veterans' Association has raised concerns about the nation potentially sending peacekeeping troops to Ukraine. Over the weekend, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he remains open to making a "small" contribution to a peacekeeping force in Ukraine if requested. And an ABC Four Corners investigation has exposed systemic failures in Australia's $20 billion a year childcare industry, ranging from child abuse to failure to enforce regulation. But is at the heart of the investigation is evidence that many private providers are prioritising profit over safety. The former chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, Professor Allan Fels, says urgent government action is required to improve the sector. The Australian Academy of Science is warning the federal government to diversify research collaboration away from the United States. Academics from at least eight universities working on joint research projects with US institutions have been sent a questionnaire seeking to identify their alignment with US domestic and foreign policy aims. Plus, former Australian Ambassador to the US, Joe Hockey, joins Radio National Breakfast to discuss the evolving state of US-Australian relations, including the impact of tariffs on key sectors like pharmaceuticals and agriculture. Hockey also reflects on the future of the AUKUS deal and the challenges of negotiating with the US, particularly under President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, the United States and Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen are both vowing escalation, after the US launched air strikes at the weekend. US President Donald Trump ordered the air strikes on Yemen's capital, Sana'a, to deter the rebels from attacking vessels on one of the world's busiest shipping corridors. Over 30 people have been killed, according to the Houthi-run health ministry. And Israel has categorically rejected a report by United Nations-backed human rights investigators that alleges Israel used "disproportionate violence against women and children" during the war in Gaza. It also accused Israeli soldiers of carrying out rape and sexual violence against Palestinians. The report released last week also accused Israel of committing "genocidal acts" by intentionally and systematically destroying embryos, sperm and other biological matter at a key reproductive clinic in Gaza. A new report from the United Nations is accusing Israel of "genocidal acts" and using sexual violence as a weapon of war in Gaza. The Netanyahu government has labelled the accusations as baseless, saying the UN is continuing antisemitic attacks against Israel and refusing to investigate Hamas’ conduct. The report was led by the Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, reporting to the UN Human Rights Council, which examined the widespread destruction of Gaza, the use of heavy explosives in civilian areas and Israeli attacks on hospitals and health facilities. Also, Russian President Vladimir Putin has given qualified support for a US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine. While the president says any ceasefire should pave the way to lasting peace, he has flagged there are "issues" which need to be discussed. In response, US President, Donald Trump, says he'd "love" to meet with President Putin. And New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has refused to repeal hate speech laws passed in state parliament last month, despite police now alleging recent antisemitic attacks were orchestrated by organised criminals to further their own causes. The Premier is now facing calls for a parliamentary inquiry into allegations he misled parliament and the public when these laws went through. In a historic ruling, the High Court has upheld Commonwealth is liable for compensation over a mining lease in North-East Arnhem Land. Meanwhile, the federal government says it hasn't given up hope of securing an exemption from US steel and aluminium tariffs, which are now in effect. The concern now is for other sectors potentially in the firing line, such as pharmaceuticals and agriculture, and the wider knock-on effects for the economy. Also on the podcast, the Islamophobia Register's latest research has confirmed what many in the Muslim community were already feeling - a dramatic rise in Islamophobia since the October 7 attacks in 2023.Their latest report shows incidents both online and in the real world have more than doubled since, and Muslim women are the targets by perpetrators. The White House has confirmed Australia will not be exempt from 25 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminium imports. The tariffs are set to take effect later on Wednesday, Australian time. Former US Ambassador to Australia, Jeffrey Bleich, says he cannot fault Australia for failing to make the right arguments. Mr Trump's spokesperson says Australia should consider moving the steel manufacturing industry to the United States if it wants to receive an exemption. Yet the Australian Steel Association says the US tariffs on steel and aluminium will have minimal impact on Australian steel. Also the United States says it will immediately lift its suspension of military aid to Ukraine and intelligence sharing with Kyiv, more than a week after imposing the measures. The announcement came at talks between Ukraine and the United States in Saudi Arabia. And the political fallout continues after police revealed that an explosives laden caravan found in Sydney's north-west - in January - was a "fake terrorism plot" organised by crime figures. The opposition leader has defended himself against the government's accusation that he "deliberately" avoided briefings on the case in order to continue the political attacks. And Donald Trump has taken to social media to label former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull a weak and ineffective leader, after Mr Turnbull told American television that Mr Trump's tariffs could drive the US into recession. As expected, Labor has had another thumping win in a W-A state election, winning a third consecutive term in government. So can anything be gleaned from that result for Labor's prospects in the federal election? Also, in 2019, Australian climate scientist, Dr Joelle Gergis gave a keynote presentation at the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic society's annual meeting warning that tropical cyclones would move as far down as Northern NSW. It's a prediction that wasn't too far off at the weekend when Cyclone Alfred made landfall as a category one system over the Moreton bay islands, north of Brisbane. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese unveiled the policy at a campaign rally in Tasmania on the weekend, in a speech laden with dire warnings about risks to the health system posed by the Coalition and Peter Dutton.
