When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. Dominic has a truly fascinating story and shares all in this episode of The DubaiLife Podcast! Dominic was an entrepreneur from the get-go, as a kid, he would post flyers to get jobs cleaning neighbors' cars in his home city of Leeds, UK. It was clear that school wasn't his bag and after completing a finance qualification at college Dominic found his self-selling flooring via eBay. With a strong desire to learn and move the business forward Dominic had incredible success with this business and in a short space of time opened up call centers and even physical retail stores. To escape the mayhem of the call center business environment Dominic would often take himself off to Dubai alone. It was during one of these trips that he just realized that Dubai had to be his future. He decided to sell the business and make the move and in the space of just a few weeks here he was. Dominic talks about many business opportunities that presented themselves to him during his early days in Dubai, one of them being baby milk power. In the end, Dominic realized that the drive behind his next venture had to be more than money, he realized that in order to succeed he needed to A) really enjoy what he was doing and B) impact the lives of others in a positive way! Wallah The Giving Movement was born. A year in of planning later and the company launch during COVID-19. The Giving Movement company uses only 100% recycled materials (mainly plastic bottles and bamboo) to disrupt the broken ways of the fashion industry! They create deeply meaningful apparel that is sustainable , made ethically in the UAE and has a positive impact through donating $4 from every item purchased to charity. $4 is enough to provide food, daily shelter, and education for a full week for one child in need. Meaning each time you purchase an item, you can change one person’s life for the better. Please head over the thegivingmovement.com to check out the full collection! Paul Evans, we salute you! What a great time we had on this episode of The DubaiLife Podcast! Paul's story has the makings of a Hollywood blockbuster for sure! It is a tremendous story of incredible highs and at times unfathomable lows! But he's here now and has put his stamp on "DubaiLife" with brands such as Asia Aisa, Q43, Wavehouse, Karma Cafe, Lock Stock & Barrel and STK Downtown! From early setbacks with dyslexia and bullying to finding big success in the fast-paced GE Sales arena! Paul set off for Egypt and hit the party life hard. All of this was shortlived as after 18 months of non-stop partying he found himself with acute pancreatitis and in a coma for 77 days. The story surrounding his illness and the coma is a podcast episode in itself! The real change in Paul's life was when he woke up from this coma. This was the inspiration behind the name of his record selling book "When I Woke Up" After a long recovery, Paul went back to Egypt and grew his business. His company transforming the Egyptian nightlife scene until another set back came in the form of the Arab Spring and the Egyptian Revolution. It was at this point that Paul with a young family ended up in Dubai and the rest is history! In this episode of The DubaiLife Podcast, Liam and Richard sit down with Nick Purvis. The man behind Candypant's incredible growth here in Dubai! After starting as a nightlife concept in the North of England in 2008 Candypants has come a long way. They have brought an unrivaled party experience to people all over the globe in destinations such as Miami, Las Vegas, Ibiza, Marbella, Oman, Doha and basically having their own party yacht at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. It's an amazing story of perseverance and how sticking to your vision can have amazing results. But it wasn't always this way. Starting out in Dubai Nick talks about the early days and how they sometimes only had 13 people turn up to their brunch. The city of Dubai is so happy Nick and the team stuck with it and changed the way we brunch. They now only focus on breaking their own records. Working alongside billionaire hotel magnate Mohammed Al Habtoor (in true Dubai spirit) they created the Candypant's Mega Brunch where they are able to host over 1,000 party goers. They even welcomed Justin Beiber to one of their parties. The future for Nick and the brand is bright and he explains how they plan to expand into a lifestyle brand. They have already started a hugely popular swimwear line, Candypants radio and a new podcast that Nick hosts.
