Originally from Oakland, California, Elliott Jones was raised in a family dedicated to social justice, civil service, and community outreach. He graduated from St. John’s University in 2008 and worked for William “Bill” Lynch Jr., NYC’s first black Deputy Mayor, developing a passion for the impact of public policy on people’s lives. Jones then worked for a decade in South Florida on common-sense gun reform, working closely with Moms Demand Action on Gun Sense in America, Everytown for Gun Safety, and Mothers Fighting for Justice. Jones has also worked toward the preservation of African American history with a number of projects in the Liberty City, Little Haiti, and Overtown neighborhoods of Miami, Florida. Since 2014 Jones’ philanthropy has focused on his grandmother’s foundation, The Dr. Maya Angelou Foundation, which provides scholarships to all students who aspire to attend historically black colleges and universities (HBCU’s). Jones returned to Oakland in 2019 in hopes of contributing to the tireless, brave work of grassroots organizations and changes agents who have always trailblazed the path of progress. Dr. DiBlasio was recently named USA Today’s Vermont's Woman of the Year in recognition of her innovative work in the field of trauma recovery for survivors of interpersonal or sexual violence. Nancy Keller (she/her), MEd, CAS, is a licensed public school educator serving the children and families of a small urban school district in Vermont. With expertise in curriculum development and instruction, she has created classroom-based and school-wide programs for physical activity. These programs were designed to address the movement needs of those children who have experienced trauma and were built upon her background in the martial arts (4th-degree black belt in Kempo-Jujitsu and 2nd-degree purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu). In this episode, our CEO Arlene Limas OLY, chats with Dr. Mary Clyde Pierce, Pediatric Emergency Physician at Lurie Children's Hospital and Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University. Together they discuss violence as an environmental toxin, the adverse effects of violence on children and their genetics, and the future of genetics in the role of violence prevention. Dr. Pierce's research interest focuses primarily on children's injuries, emphasizing differentiating abusive from accidental trauma. Dr. Pierce collaborates with a multi-disciplinary lab with an emphasis on injury biomechanics. This lab combines the expertise of medicine and engineering and utilizes both a clinical and an experimental approach. Dr. Pierce's research focus is the development of injury plausibility models, including clinical decision rules, for differentiating abusive and accidental trauma in the young child that combines medical, social, biological, and engineering knowledge. Her interest is also in epigenetics, psychosocial risk factors, factors, ecological factors, and how child maltreatment confers health problems later in life. Disrupting The Dominoes: Episode 2 Featuring Magdalena Diaz, co-founder of Soul Warriors ESD Magdalena Diaz currently works at one of the country's largest public universities where has worked in Student Affairs since 2017. In her role, she provides trauma-informed responses to issues of sexual misconduct, dating/domestic violence, and stalking throughout the campus community. She is the co-founder of Soul Warriors ESD, whose goal is to facilitate Empowerment Self Defense workshops through a trauma-informed and decolonial lens. Magdalena previously served as the Legal Department Manager at a domestic violence advocacy center in Orange County. During that time, she co-developed the Courthouse Advocacy Project, which now serves nearly 1,800 domestic violence survivors each year in Orange County. She is certified in Mental Health Recovery and Trauma-Informed Care and is also a certified Restorative Justice Facilitator. She is also a level one Empowerment Self Defense Instructor. Magdalena is a first-generation professional who received her BA in Psychology from California State University Long Beach and her MA in Education with a concentration in Counseling at San Diego State University.
