On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. Kevin O'Connor spared no one from a total evisceration of the NBA All-Star Weekend, especially the new Sunday night game format. Why did TNT make the night more about themselves than the players? How did Commissioner Adam Silver allow an All-Star Weekend in San Francisco without Steph Curry in the 3-point contest? How is Kevin supposed to be excited about a "G-Leaguer" that "only uses props" in the Slam Dunk contest? KOC loves LeBron but says he's to blame as well for pulling out of the All-Star Game last-minute! EVERYTHING All-Star is a mess according to Kevin and Dan Titus. The guys also break down the several weird sound bytes from Draymond Green, including he and Jimmy Butler both being "alpha" personalities, Dray's prediction that the Warriors will win the title THIS season, and Green allegedly "turning down" the Warriors' Head Coaching position in the future once Steve Kerr retires. 0:22 - Team Shaq Wins 41-25! All 30 NBA teams are ranked by tier in this episode of the Kevin O'Connor Show. Heading into All-Star Weekend, which FOUR teams are "The Favorites" according to Kevin (and who's #1)? Which 3 teams does KOC view as "Contender...ish?" Next up, there's the "RESPECT YOUR ELDERS" category, the "SOMETHING IS MISSING" bucket, and then the dreaded "GRIPPING THE ELECTRICAL CORD" tier. Rounding out the rest of the league: the "League Pass Darlings" and unfortunately, the bottom tier: "POOP FOR COOPER" Flagg. All 30 teams fit into one of those categories, and KOC ranks them ALL here. Plus Tom Haberstroh stops by for an unexpectedly HEATED debate about "Old Man Chris Paul!" Why KOC thinks the San Antonio Spurs are tanking in broad daylight, why the Philadelphia 76ers' Paul George looks like "Khris Middleton but with $100 Million owed to him" and how Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic are playing some of the best 2-man basketball the NBA has EVER SEEN. What a debut! The Los Angeles Lakers dismantled the Utah Jazz on Monday night, and the chemistry between Luka Doncic and LeBron James was palpable and on full display. KOC and Daman Rangoola couldn't believe their eyes, it's really real! Daman takes KOC inside the minds of Lakers fans, who actually — for real — feel badly for Dallas Mavericks fans. And with Anthony Davis' injury situation already looking dire, KOC and Daman wonder if the Mavericks "win-now" strategy is about to free-fall. Jon Krawczynski stops by the KOC Show to talk all things Minnesota Timberwolves. How close was Minnesota to ACTUALLY landing Kevin Durant on Deadline Day? Jon offers insight on what exactly went down as the Wolves tried to create the "DUR-ANT" pairing (and how they still could this coming offseason). KOC and Jon also react to the Wolves' embarrassing loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, who welcomed newcomer De'Andre Hunter into their lineup. And, Jon has the latest on the Timberwolves' majority ownership situation. Never in the long, storied history of The Kevin O'Connor Show has KOC managed to hit ALL 30 NBA teams in one BONANZA of a podcast... until now! Headlined by the Golden State Warriors landing Jimmy Butler (and whether that move makes them a contender), what an incredible 2025 NBA Trade Deadline. The biggest LOSER on Deadline Day was the Phoenix Suns -- whose future now looks beyond bleak as they deal with the aftermath of failed Kevin Durant trade talks (and now: a toxic locker-room). But the Milwaukee Bucks aren't too far behind! KOC and Tom explain how the Kyle Kuzma deal spells doom for Milwaukee in the form of Giannis Antetokounmpo potentially asking for a trade as soon as this summer! And, why the Cleveland Cavaliers went from rich-to-richer in acquiring De'Andre Hunter from the Atlanta Hawks. Kevin explains why the Hawks' Deadline activity showed him that Trae Young's future in ATL is now in serious doubt. Plus: Tom and Kevin don't exactly see eye-to-eye on the MARK WILLIAMS fit with the Los Angeles Lakers. And what on earth were the Toronto Raptors doing acquiring Brandon Ingram? Why the Sacramento Kings acquisition of Jonas Valanciunas could be a jumbo-sized win, and so much more. This episode has it all, just hit play. Sit back and relax as if you were the Nuggets, Wolves, Blazers and Magic on Trade Deadline Day. Never in NBA history has an offense been spearheaded by TWO jumbo playmakers -- until now. Luka Doncic and LeBron James could unlock creative, brilliant offensive options for Head Coach JJ Redick, according to Laker Film Room's own Pete Zayas. KOC and Pete break down the potential upside for the Lakers, the downside (hint: DEFENSE) and why prioritizing another trade for a BIG MAN is utterly imperative if the Lakers want to compete for a title this year. Don't look now, but Kevin Durant could be on the move. KOC is also joined by Bleacher Report's Mo Dakhil discuss the potential destinations they see as a fit for KD, along with what they're both hearing from their sources ahead of the deadline. And the big winner (so far) of this year's Trade Deadline? NOT the Los Angeles Lakers -- but the San Antonio Spurs (!) according to Kevin O'Connor. Why the De'Aaron Fox trade will have Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs contending as soon as this year, because Kevin thinks San Antonio isn't done wheeling just yet. Mavs fans: Kevin sees you, and Kevin hears you. Please sit down, get comfortable, and tell us how Nico Harrison's decision to trade Luka Doncic hurt you. Because that's what his good friend and Dallas Mavericks diehard fan Jason Gallagher did on this edition of the KOC Show. Jason's beloved Luka Doncic is now a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, and there's nothing anyone can do about that. Dr. O'Connor first tried immersive therapy with Jason, where Kevin played the role of Nico Harrison so that Jason could confront "the Mavs GM." Then Kevin helped Jason get through the stages of grief, with a little bargaining. Maybe Anthony Davis can help win a title this year? Perhaps some trades are still in the works for the Mavs, including Zion Williamson, Zach LaVine, and Cam Johnson coming to Dallas. It's all on this therapeutic installment of The Kevin O'Connor Show. On Saturday night, the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers pulled off what might be the most shocking trade in NBA history. Luka Doncic (along with Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris) traded to the Lakers for Anthony Davis and the Lakers 2029 1st round pick. Stunning news that Kevin O'Connor broke down in full -- along with his full trade grades, and why he thinks the Lakers may still have a move or two up their sleeve. 📢Yahoo Sports podcast network: https://apple.co/3zEuT…
On this installment of The Kevin O'Connor Show, New York Knicks superfan and Yahoo's own Ariel Helwani stops by to demand RESPECT for his squad! Ariel is tired of national media — including TNT's "Inside the NBA" — disrespecting a Knicks team that has been rolling as of late. Ariel is sick of hearing the tired take that Coach Thibs plays his starters too many minutes. Helwani didn't stop there — he thinks Josh Hart is hooping like a "top 24 player" in the NBA! And that Jalen Brunson is the "pound-for-pound" #1 player in the NBA. And Karl-Anthony Towns gets some major love for his defense against Nikola Jokic — despite Draymond Green thinking otherwise on social media. Speaking of Dray's beef with KAT, Ariel explains why he wants to see the two of them duke it out in the octagon. And while we're at it, who would win in a real fight between Shaquille O'Neal and Dwight Howard? Don't miss Kevin's takes on the NBA All-Star Reserves and snubs. KOC thinks *5* players should have gotten in before Jaylen Brown (!), has thoughts on Trae Young's snub, and explains why the Kyrie Irving omission was so glaring. Houston Rockets fan and podcast personality Roosh Williams stops by on this episode for a deep dive on Clutch City, including his thoughts on Alperen Sengun making the All-Star reserves over Domantas Sabonis of the Sacramento Kings. Plus, could Houston be in the running for Kevin Durant sooner than we think? On this episode of 'The Kevin O'Connor Show,' NBA player Larry Nance Jr. stops by to remember his former teammate, Kobe Bryant. Both KOC and Larry have a hard time believing it's been 5 years since we lost the legend. They talk about the lasting impact Kobe had on Larry's career and some of the funny moments they shared on and off the court. Larry had a front row seat to Kobe's 60-point final game and told Kevin what it was like watching that special night unfold. Tom Haberstroh joins to discuss the latest news from around the league, including the latest on trade talks surrounding disgruntled Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler. On this absolutely jam-packed edition of the Kevin O'Connor Show, ESPN's Bobby Marks *and* college basketball guru John Fanta both stop by to talk hoops. First up, the Front Office insider Marks is asked whether he believes the Memphis Grizzlies are the secret team in the running for Jimmy Butler. Knowing he's a rental like what the Toronto Raptors once got for Kawhi Leonard, would the Grizz do it? Plus KOC and Bobby break down the trade possibilities for 3 disappointing teams: the Phoenix Suns, the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Golden State Warriors. Interestingly enough, Bobby and Kevin both seem to think Draymond Green could be moved to the Dallas Mavericks or the Detroit Pistons. And between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Oklahoma City Thunder, which powerhouse is the more likely trade destination for Cam Johnson? And when John Fanta stops by, Cooper Flagg is the name of the game. Which NBA player comps can they both see in the Duke phenom? Kawhi Leonard, Kevin Garnett, and Anthony Davis are just some of the names that the guys land on when it comes to the guaranteed #1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Plus, TikTok may be in flux but PikTok is here to stay — Kevin introduces a new segment which is just that: talkin’ 2025 NBA draft prospects as seen through the eyes of the college basketball expert, Mr. Fanta. On this episode of the Kevin O'Connor Show, Tom Haberstroh and KOC play a little game of Panic Meter with certain NBA teams that are struggling as of late. Should these teams feel CHILL, should they be SWEATING or is it full blown PANIC? The guys start with the Boston Celtics, who have been playing .500 ball as of late. Is Kristaps Porzingis entirely to blame for Boston's recent woes? The second team Kevin and Tom evaluate are the Minnesota Timberwolves. Both guys are panicking, and Julius Randle is the main reason why. But is "Dubious Handles" impossible to move ahead of the deadline? And thirdly, the Golden State Warriors. Kevin and Tom both think the Warriors have no shot to win this season, and it may be time for Steph and the Dubs to part ways. Would that potential divorce look similar to how Tom Brady left the New England Patriots? Would Warriors fans still support Steph, even if he were to leave? KOC thinks Steph owes nothing to the Warriors, and it would benefit Curry and the NBA if he were moved to a contender. In fact, what if that contender was the Houston Rockets? Kevin and Tom have concocted a hypothetical trade you need to see to believe. And if Rockets trade rumors are your thing, don't miss KOC and Tom discuss hypotheticals involving Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, as the Phoenix Suns' season of misery continues. On this episode of the Kevin O'Connor Show, Morgan Ragan and Deuce Mason of the Deuce & Mo Podcast hop on to tell Kevin how wrong he's been about their beloved Sacramento Kings. Deuce and Mo don't hold back, as they're sick and tired of the negative Kings takes KOC has dished out this season - enough is enough! Especially now that the team is on their improbable win streak. They discuss the surprising differences between interim head coach Doug Christie and former head coach Mike Brown. And a must-see blockbuster trade proposal that KOC concocted to bring Cam Johnson to Sacramento. Plus an incredible mailbag that features Kevin declaring the Big Baller Brand is all the way back (and he's got the gear to prove it). Find out how LiAngelo, LaMelo and Lonzo are making their old man proud. KOC also weighs in on Tyler Herro's incredible ascent for the Miami Heat, if the Portland Trail Blazers might need to consider moving on from Scoot Henderson, why the New Orleans Pelicans have almost nothing to be optimistic about, and if the Orlando Magic might be the perfect trade destination for Zach LaVine. On this episode of the Kevin O'Connor Show, Tom Haberstroh hops on to discuss the instant classic between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Oklahoma City Thunder and of course the latest trade rumors as we inch closer to the deadline. Kevin and Tom both agree after Wednesday night's statement victory, the Cleveland Cavaliers are bona fide NBA title contenders. KOC points out the Cavs' depth is full of unsung heroes like Ty Jerome and Dean Wade. They know the matchup might not be the sexiest when it comes to TV ratings, but who cares! They both want to see these two teams face off again in June and luckily for fans these 2 teams face off again next week (if only Chet Holmgren was healthy!) The guys broke down the chances of the New Orleans Pelicans actually moving Zion Williamson now that he's back in the lineup and looking great. Tom's idea: why shouldn't the Spurs take a swing for Zion? Pairing Williamson and Wemby might be the modern day equivalent of Shaq-Kobe when it comes to unstoppable duos. The trade chatter didn't stop there: each of the guys give their take on where Bradley Beal and Jimmy Butler could wind up, too. While Golden State Warriors fans wish Steph Curry would get some help, the guys explain why GSW may stand pat. And speaking of "Pat," Riley and the Miami Heat might be better off tanking for Cooper Flagg at this point. Fresh off Tom attending Duke's last game, Tom and Kevin discuss the ultra-talented 18-year-old. (1:45) - Cavaliers beat Thunder, prove they are legit (17:40) - Wemby no match for Giannis in Spurs-Bucks showdown (26:40) - Zion Williamson returns, should NOP sell-high?
