Thinking Critically is a podcast brought to you by Intelligent Speculation and hosted by Jonathan Maloney, which provides individuals with the tools necessary to become a Critical Thinker. Informal logic (i.e., argument types, validity, soundness, logical fallacies, etc.), cognitive biases, mental models, and the scientific method along with other science related topics are all explained in detail and at a level that is accessible to anyone with a high school education. Intelligent Speculation was founded on the belief that a society equipped with the proper set of critical thinking skills will possess more rational individuals who make better decisions, which ensures a better future for all of us.

Bettina Schneider, MPH, is a PHI/CDC Global Health Epidemiology Fellow working with CDC South Africa within the Prevention Branch of the Division of Global HIV and Tuberculosis (DGHT). She holds a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology from the New York University School of Global Public Health where she graduated spring of this year. Prior international experience includes academic collaboration in Beirut, Lebanon with UNICEF and American University of Beirut to increase measles immunization coverage and cholera prevention efforts in Syrian UNIDP refugee camps during spring of 2019. During January of 2020, she collaborated with NYU Shanghai in Shanghai, China researching the affects of climate change on communicable respiratory illness. Bettina is familiar with working in the public sector of public health. She has previously worked for the Minnesota Department of Health in the Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Prevention and Control (IDEPC) Division with a primary focus on zoonotic surveillance. More recently, she has worked for New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in the Bureau of Communicable Disease with the surveillance of critical threat antimicrobial-resistance, where she conducted a city-wide surveillance evaluation of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) infections. In this episode, I am disagreeing, respectfully of course, with Jim Matthews. We discuss: •His background and how it has come to shape his current worldview. •His opinion that Rod Balgojevich, the 40th Governor of Illinois, went to prison because he was interfering with the Democratic Party's strategy. That the 17 charges he was found guilty of were unjustified. •How the Government creates market distortions with the example of FHA loans presented. •How there will always be people willing to take advantage of whatever system that we design, but that this isn't a sufficient reason to not consider implementing that system. •His interpretation of laws created by the judicial system as being more like rules instead of actual laws. In his opinion, the only laws that we have are God's laws and the laws of physics. •The scientific method and how it is not a perfect enterprise, but it is the most reliable way of generating new knowledge. •How he doesn't like the current trajectory of the country and uses the current rioting and looting as an example. •And other topics. Jim Matthews grew up on the south side of Chicago in the 1950s. Upon graduating from high school, he enlisted in the air force and served for four years as a mechanic where he primarily worked on airplane ejection systems. After his time in the military, he spent 31 years at Illinois Bell and five years at ComEd in IT. After ComEd, he then spent 3 years working for the state of Illinois as the Chief Information Officer where he helped to restructure the state's IT department and ended up saving the state $130 million a year. After working for the state, he then moved on to Charter communications company as the Vice President of architecture and strategy until his retirement. In this episode, I'm speaking with Dr. Patrick Maloney about the current state of the pandemic. Dr. Patrick Maloney is beginning a fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention beginning this upcoming September. He will be working as a part of the Key Populations Team within the Epidemiology and Surveillance Branch of the CDC Center for Global Health. The Key Populations Surveillance Team provides technical leadership and assistance to strengthen local capacity for conducting HIV surveillance among key and other at-risk populations. While this position is based in Atlanta, GA, he will be traveling frequently to Africa and Southeast Asia in order to support local public health programs. He earned his Ph.D. From Louisiana State University and holds an MPH from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has authored a number of publications, volunteered with the Phoenix Projects - an organization dedicated to the expansion of primary education, local employment, and public health - in both Nicaragua and Guatemala, and has even designed and taught courses in public health. He earned his Ph.D. In industrial engineering from the University of Sheffield. He was also a Fullbright Scholar at the Georgia Institute of Technology studying the impacts of university innovation on local and national economies. As an award-winning teacher, he has taught at some of the leading business and engineering schools.
