×This week review the 1981 historical sports drama film Chariots of Fire directed by Hugh Hudson. It is based on the true story of two British athletes in the 1924 Olympics: Eric Liddell, a devout Scottish Christian who runs for the glory of God, and Harold Abrahams, an English Jew who runs to overcome prejudice. Ben Cross and Ian Charleson star as Abrahams and Liddell. Chariots of Fire was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won four, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Score for Vangelis's electronic theme tune. At the 35th British Academy Film Awards, the film was nominated in 11 categories and won in three, including Best Film. It is ranked 19th in the British Film Institute's list of Top 100 British films but the Scotsman thinks it's rubbish!!!! Who does he think he is....he's as arrogant as Abrahams in this one. We are delighted to welcome Saul back to the podcast and what a revelation he turns out to be. Saul is a sports purist and he articulates himself much better than the Aussie and the Scotsman. We discuss the current Olympics and what should and should not be there. The Aussie gets deeply personal about his competitiveness and how it can damage your personality. He gives us a glimpse into the pysche of a professional sportsperson and what winning means. The Aussie asks the question: "If the game is on the line are you the person that wants to take the last kick or the the last shot, are you the one that can handle the pressure, the clutch player?" This week we discuss the 1957 American legal drama film 12 Angry men directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Henry Fonda, Lee J Cobb, Ed Begley, E G Marshall and Jack Warden. The film tells the story of a jury of 12 men as they deliberate the conviction or acquittal of a teenager charged with murder on the basis of reasonable doubt; disagreement and conflict among the jurors forces them to question their morals and values. The Aussie had not seen this one and.......he loved it. This is another of our very early podcast so we get straight into. We dissect this one forensically just like the jurors. So clever. One room. Captivating. One against 12. Recommend this highly. You can comment on our Instagram page or on Spotify under the podcast show in the comment section and we will reply. This week we review the 1980 biographical drama film The Elephant Man loosely based on the life of Joseph Merrick (referred to as "John" in the film), a severely deformed man who lived in London in the late 19th century. The film was directed by David Lynch. It stars Sir John Hurt, Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft, Sir John Gielgud, Wendy Hiller, Michael Elphick, Hannah Gordon, and Freddie Jones. Make no mistake - the Aussie absolutely hated this. Not one positive thing to say. This podcast descents into absolute chaos. He gives it his lowest score to date and he did not realise it was a true story. The Scotsman is mortified. "how can a movie reviewer just say... " I don't like it?" This one gets VERY fiery. The Aussie tries to move to trivia very quickly but the Aussie holds off and the arguments continue. Did you like it? You can comment on our Instagram page or on Spotify under the podcast show in the comment section and we will reply. This week we discuss the 1985 American comedy Brewster's Millions directed by Walter Hill and starring Richard Pryor and John Candy. What a concept this is....what would you do? Spend the $30m in 30 days for a chance to win $300m or take $1m up front (1985 values). Did you know this is based on a 1902 novel? The story is over 120 years old. No, neither did we. It has been re-made 7 times and this is the latest. The boys discuss what they would do with a $100m lottery win. The answers are very different from both. This is good fun and a nostalgic look back at a favourite. We think they should remake it again. Imagine what you could do. This week we review the 2003 comedy film School of Rock directed by Richard Linklater. The film stars Jack Black, Joan Cusack, Mike White, and Sarah Silverman. Black plays struggling rock guitarist Dewey Finn, who is fired from his band and subsequently poses as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. After witnessing the musical talent of the students, Dewey forms a band of fourth-graders to attempt to win the upcoming Battle of the Bands and use his winnings to pay his rent. Did this film work because of Jack Black - or was it a ensemble performance? Could any other actor have played this role? We discuss. This was one of our early podcasts when we were just starting out - you can tell. A lot shorter than normal, we don't give it a rating and the Aussie nearly forgets about the trivia segment! Really fun family movie though and we thoroughly enjoyed watching it. We definately recommend you should watch this one with the family. This week we review the 2016 American coming-of-age drama film Moonlight written and directed by Barry Jenkins, based on Tarell Alvin McCraney's unpublished semi-autobiographical play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue. It stars Trevante Rhodes, André Holland, Janelle Monáe, Ashton Sanders, Jharrel Jerome, Naomie Harris, and Mahershala Ali and it won the Acaademy Award for best Picture. For once we agree. The Aussie and the Scotsman are very surprised at this choice of winner. This movie DID NOT deserve to win best oscar NOR did Mahershala Ali deserve to win best supporting actor..........in our professional opinion of course. Interesting movie but nothing special for us reviewing here in Australia. Maybe in the States where this is more prevelant in specific communities it resonates better hence the Oscar.. If agreeing wasn't enough you should tune in to hear the Scotsman apologise to the Aussie regarding a movie choice later in the podcast. Our lowest ratings yet. No need to watch before listening. This week we review the 2019 American psychological thriller film Joker directed by Todd Phillips. It stars Joaquin Phoenix and provides an alternative origin story for the Joker. The film follows Arthur Fleck, a failed clown and aspiring stand-up comedian whose descent into mental illness and nihilism inspires a violent countercultural revolution against the wealthy in a decaying Gotham City. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, and Frances Conroy appear in supporting roles. We welcome back Ben King to the studio. Ben is an on-set photographer as well as taking key art shots for movies and TV. Check out our interview with him in an earlier episode. Ben brings the Joker to us this week with a technically interesting perspective of the film through the lens of someone in the industry. Ben kicks off with colourful descriptions of the movie that has the Aussie all aflutter. Words with more than one syllable that both boys struggle to keep up with. This is a brilliant but dark movie as you would expect. Delving into mental health and abuse. It is one of Todd Phillips best movies but we ask how did he manage to get it so wrong for the sequel. You can comment on our Instagram page or on Spotify under the podcast show in the comment section and we will reply. This week we discuss the 2009 American comedy film The Hangover directed by Todd Phillips and starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Heather Graham, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong and Jeffrey Tambor. It tells the story of Phil Wenneck (Cooper), Stu Price (Helms), Alan Garner (Galifianakis), and Doug Billings (Bartha), who travel to Las Vegas for a bachelor party to celebrate Doug's impending marriage. However, Phil, Stu, and Alan wake up with Doug missing and no memory of the previous night's events, and must find the groom before the wedding can take place. Why does this film resonate so much with the boys? We discuss which character we would most like to be. The Aussie goes flat when he hears the the Scotsman's guess. Who do you think it will be? You either love this movie or hate it - we loved it - and we fanboy and drool over Bradley Cooper. Lots of impersonations by the Aussie in this one - enjoy . We did! Today we are reviewing the 1987 American war comedy film Good Morning Vietnam directed by Barry Levinson and starring Golden Globe winner Robin Williams, Forest Whitaker, JT Walksh and Bruno Kirby. Set in Saigon in 1965 , during the Vietnam War, the film stars Williams as an Armed Forces Radio Service DJ who proves hugely popular with the troops, but infurates his superiors. This is Williams at his improvisational best - a movie that is hard to dislike and sad because we lost Robin Williams and his comedic genius too soon. The Aussie comes out with all the lines in this one and they both agree this is one not to miss. We have a discussion on news cencorship and as this is one of the first podcasts we ever did it's a little more structured and not quite as fast and loose as our recent ones. Still we think it's worth a listen as this is another great movie. Gooooooodddddddd Moooooorrrnnninggggg Vietnaaammmmmmm (try saying that without having Robin Williams in your head!) This week we review the 2000 American biographical sports drama film Remember the Titans produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The screenplay is loosely based on the true story of coach Herman Boone, portrayed by Denzel Washington, and his attempt to integrate the T. C. Williams High School (now Alexandria City High School) football team in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1971. Will Patton portrays Bill Yoast, Boone's assistant coach. Real-life athletes Gerry Bertier and Julius Campbell are portrayed by Ryan Hurst and Wood Harris, respectively. If you love sports movies you will love this. Otherwise, according to the Scotsman give it a miss. Look, anything with Denzel is great, he has great screen presence and knows how to deliver a rousing monologue. The Aussie as we know loves his sports movies and this was his pick. This is a movie about racsim and the division in society - set in 1971. This was one of our very first podcasts we did back in 2023....and you can tell. (Edit note: Sylvester Stallone is in Escape to Victory not The Great Escape). This week we discuss the 2014 American psycholigcal drama music film Whiplash starring Miles Teller and J K Simmons. Considered one of the best movies of the 2010's this won Simmons every award going. The Aussie takes over - he hadn't see it but being a movie about excellence in performance and pushing as hard as you can to get the most out of yourself he talks about his own personal experiences as a former sports professional. The movie focuses on an ambitious music student and aspiring jazz drummer (Teller), who is pushed to his limit by his abusive instructor (Simmons) at the Shaffer Conservatory in New York City. The Aussie goes through this one in great detail and he tells us some stories about the 10 years he spent training every day until he had to make a decision in his final year of school - prepare for the Olympics or drop it and take a different career path. Not much arguing here - it is a straightforward recap and discussion of the main themes of this great - and must watch - movie. This week we review the 2017 absurdist psychological horror thriller film The Killing Of A Sacred Deer directed and co-produced by Yorgos Lanthimos. It stars Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Barry Keoghan, Raffey Cassidy, Sunny Suljic, Alicia Silverstone, and Bill Camp. It follows a cardiac surgeon who introduces his family to a teenage boy with a connection to his past, after which they mysteriously begin to fall ill. This is not one that we expect the Aussie to like, enjoy or even understand which is why the Scotsman wanted him to watch it. We want him to get to know Barry Keoghan whom the Scotsman loves. "Absurdist movies" are not his cup of tea, although he "didn't hate it as much as he thought he would". We find out that the Aussie does not like Nicole Kidman at all and the movie asks the worst question of all....if you had to pick a child to sacrifice, which one would it be? You can comment on our Instagram page or on Spotify under the podcast show in the comment section and we will reply. This week we review the 1993 American coming-of-age crime drama film A Bronx Tale directed by and starring Robert De Niro in his directorial debut adapted from Chazz Palminteri's 1989 play of the same name. It tells the coming-of-age story of an Italian-American boy, Calogero (Lillo Brancato Jr), who, after encountering a local Mafia boss (Palminteri), is torn between the temptations of organized crime and the values of his honest, hardworking father (De Niro), as well as racial tensions in his community. We welcome back to the podcast the Scotsman's son Max. This a definite watch before you listen. We all loved it. Robert De Niro playing against type in this gangster movie - but not your typical gangster movie. The Aussie "absolutely" loved this one but he loses it again when the Scotsman glosses over the "most divine" part of the film, 'The Door Test Scene; "you don't have a heart and body" he says . The boys could not be more differernt. The Aussie loves the love scene. The Scotsman loves the bar fight scene. And that in a nutshell is the Aussie and the Scotsman! Max tells us that "Sonny has mad aura, big up Sonny", which we will have translated one day. There are a few plot holes don't the film as we discuss. But we can let them pass - it's a film about principles and values and we highly recommend you watch before you listen. This week we review the 2012 American political action thriller film Zero Dark Thirty directed and produced by Kathryn Bigelow. The film dramatizes the nearly decade-long international manhunt for Osama bin Laden, leader of the terrorist network Al-Qaeda, after the September 11 attacks. This search leads to the discovery of his compound in Pakistan and the U.S. military raid where bin Laden was killed on May 2, 2011. Jessica Chastain stars as Maya, a fictional CIA intelligence analyst, with Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Reda Kateb, Mark Strong, James Gandolfini, Kyle Chandler, Chris Pratt, Mark Duplass, Harold Perrineau, and Frank Grillo in supporting roles. It was nominated in five categories at the 85th Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actress for Chastain, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound Editing, which it won in a tie with Skyfall. A revolting story from the Aussie at the start kicks us off with a great podcast despite him still bumbling his way through the intro. We know the plot. We know how it ends. But the journey is incredible. "Was this our JFK moment" and "do you believe in an eye for an eye" are a couple of the questions from the Aussie this week. This podcast was recorded in December 2024 and we talk a bit about the Middle East conflict. We talk a lot about Abu Ghraib and Seal Team 6. And the Scotsman recommends two movies they won't review on this podcast but are excellent and stars Mark Duplass from this movie, Paddleton and Biosphere. This week we review the 1979 American legal drama Kramer vs. Kramer starring Dustin Hoffman (oscar winner for this movie) and Meryl Streep. It tells the story of a couple's divorce, its impact on their young son, and the subsequent evolution of their relationship and views on parenting. Kramer vs. Kramer explores the psychology and fallout of divorce, and touches on prevailing or emerging social issues, such as gender roles, fathers' rights, work-life balance, and single parents. This is two all-time legends at the top of their game . And it is a movie definitely worth a watch - something the Aussie and the Scotsman both agree on. This week we review the 1999 American psychological thriller Fight Club directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter. Norton plays the unnamed narrator, who is unhappy in his white collar job. He forms a 'fight club' with soap salesman Tyler Durden (Pitt) and starts a relationship with Marla Singer (Bonham Carter). This is one of our early podcasts from mid 2024 so it's a quicky but a goody. The Aussie had not seen this one - do you think he liked it? How can he not? This is one of the must-see movies. He articulates beautifully why he loves this movie, all movies and why he hates the 'breaking of the 4th wall'. This is definitely a spoiler alert movie if you haven't seen it - and if you don't know what the rules of fight club are, then you definitely need to watch! This week we review the 1981 sports war film Escape to Victory directed by John Huston and starring Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine, Max von Sydow and Pelé. The film is about Allied prisoners of war who are interned in a German prison camp during the Second World War who play an exhibition match of football against a German team. The film received great attention upon its release, as it starred professional footballers Bobby Moore, Osvaldo Ardiles, Kazimierz Deyna, Paul Van Himst, Mike Summerbee, Hallvar Thoresen, Werner Roth and Pelé. We thought we found Utopia! War movie combined with sport.....but alas not to be. The Aussie absolutely hates this movie - his worst to date! "unwatchable, slow, cringe, dated, not funny, not serious, worst film I have ever seen!!!!" he proclaims The Scotsman reviews it like a warm blanket. The feeling an old movie has on you. Was Sly miscast? We are unanimous in that answer. You can comment on our Instagram page or on Spotify under the show in the comments section to let us know what you think. This week we review the 2009 war film Inglourious Basterds written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, starring Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, Michael Fassbender, Eli Roth, Diane Kruger, Daniel Brühl, Til Schweiger and Mélanie Laurent. The film tells an alternate history story of two converging plots to assassinate Nazi Germany's leadership at a Paris cinema—one through a British operation largely carried out by a team of Jewish American soldiers led by First Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Pitt), and another by French Jewish cinema proprietor Shosanna Dreyfus (Laurent) who seeks to avenge her murdered family. Both are faced against Hans Landa (Waltz), an SS colonel with a fearsome reputation for hunting Jews. We are delighted to welcome back to the studio Marty Benson. Marty is currently Director of Content for Melbourne for EndemolShine. Endemol Shine Australia is a part of Banijay, the world’s largest international TV and media content producer in the Southern Hemisphere. If you haven't listened check out our fascinating interview with him where he takes us behind the scenes of some of Australia's biggest shows (think MAFS, Masterchef and I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here). We deep dive into the food scenes, the sound effects and the attention to detail in each scene. Marty talks to us about the pacing of a movie - particularly that 'bat scene'. This week we review the 1957 epic war film The Bridge on the River Kwai directed by David Lean and based on the 1952 novel written by Pierre Boulle. Alec Guinness stars as Colonel Nicholson, a British officer imprisoned in a Japanese POW camp run by Colonel Saito (Sessue Hayakawa), where he's forced to build a railway bridge. After initially resisting Saito's demands that officers perform manual labor, Nicholson paradoxically becomes obsessed with building the best bridge possible, viewing it as a monument to British ingenuity. Meanwhile, escaped American prisoner Commander Shears (William Holden) is recruited by Major Warden (Jack Hawkins) to return and destroy the bridge, leading to a climactic finale where Nicholson must confront the reality that his pride has led him to aid the enemy, culminating in tragedy as the bridge is destroyed. Despite our best efforts we still got the name of the movie wrong at the intro....it gets better from there and we somehow deep dive into the Aussie's relationship with his mother right from the start. A little pyscho-analysis from the Scotsman and a shout out to the Aussie's mum, Lea. This movie takes the Aussie by surprise and do you think he liked it? We know he is not one for older movies. Embarassingly the Aussie does not know that Sir Alex Guiness played Obi Wan Kenobi - what kind of a movie reviewer does not know that. At the end prepare yourself ahe Scotsman regales us with the words to the tune of Colonel Bogey while trying to imitate Alec Guiness at every opportunity. The Killing Fields to The Pianist. Mississippi Burning to The Accused. The Hurricane to the Elephant Man and much more We finish with our top 10. As the Aussie says - these types of movies are the only ones we seem to agree on. We like to think of ourselves as Injustice Warriors - standing up for those who can't. This week we discuss the 2023 American biographical sports drama film Air directed by Ben Affleck and starring Ben Affleck , Matt Damon, Jason Bateman, Marlon Wayans, Chris Messina, Chris Tucker and Viola Davis. The film is based on true events about the origin of Air Jordan, a basketball shoeline, of which a Nike employee tries to strike a business deal with rookie player Michael Jordan. Heads up ironically this podcast should also go down in history - like the signing of Nike - as one of our worst produced podcasts ever! This is one of our first when we were testing podcasts over zoom. While the sound might be dodgy the content is not which is why we are not redoing it. This is all about the Aussie. He loves how this deal revolutionised sport. You don't need to enjoy sports to watch this movie but it would be handy if you knew what Nike was and enjoyed wearing their gear. Amazing to watch and listen to the origins of the Nike brand and how the Michael Jordan deal put them on the map. This week we review the 2023 American biographical romantic drama film Maestro that centers on the relationship between American composer Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia Montealegre. It was directed by Bradley Cooper, from a screenplay he wrote with Josh Singer. It was produced by Cooper, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. The film stars Carey Mulligan as Montealegre alongside Cooper as Bernstein. Both the Aussie and the Scotsman are in agreement in their review of this film. It is interesting to see the life of Leonard Bernstein portrayed on film and an "unbelievable" performance by Cooper. The Scotsman thinks he should have won the best actor Oscar. If you have heard of Bernstein and you like his music, it is worth a watch. This is a love story. And questions are asked "can you love a man and a woman?" The Scotsman thinks he "just loved to love" and we find similarities to that of Elton John and Freddie Mercury. This week we discuss 1989 American epic biographical anti-war drama film Born on the Fourth July directed by Oliver Stone, starring Tom Cruise, Willem Dafoe, Kyra Sedgwick, Tom Berenger, John C McGinley, Vivica Fox and many others. The Aussie had not seen this one and wow this really struck a chord with him. Both the boys are passionate and empathic as they discuss the horrors of war and the devastation caused to those that served and their families. While Platoon took us into the depths of war and the hell the soldiers went through, this one looks at the Vietnam Vet's after the war and how they transitioned back into civilian life. This is the 2nd in Stone's trilogy. Worthy of its numerous accolades and awards. The Aussie dominates in this podcast, he is off and running, it really had a strong impact on him. This week we are delighted to welcome Ben King to the studio. Ben King is an on-set photographer. We hear about the good experiences and the not so good experiences within the movie industry. We hear about some of the biggest movies and biggest stars Ben has worked on and with. Ben tell us about his experience working on the Robbie Williams bio - Better Man - one of the Scotsman favourites and we hear a lovely story about working with our very own Cate Blanchett. We talk about the dark side and the light side - no pun intended. We talk Eric Bana, Cate Blanchet, Alan Ritchson and Vincent Cassell. We get into a discussion about what is art - and try to convince Ben that his work is and should be considered 'art'. Ben is a very modest and humble man yet he opens to us with integrity and honesty which is a fascinating insight into the business. We hear about Ben's favourite job experience in Paris during the pandemic on a movie with Vincent Cassell and Eva Green. at the end of the podast we hit Ben with some rapid fire questions - we thought we had him stumped at the last question but he pulls it out the bag. Thanks for joining us Ben! You can comment on our Instagram page or on Spotify under the podcast show in the comment section and we will reply. This week review the 1991 American action film Point Break directed by Kathryn Bigelow. It stars Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Lori Petty and Gary Busey. The film's title refers to the surfing term "point break", where a wave breaks as it hits a point of land jutting out from the coastline. The film features Reeves as an undercover FBI agent who is tasked with investigating the identities of a group of bank robbers while he develops a complex relationship with the group's leader (Swayze). The Aussie says "it's a cult classic" the Scotsman disagrees and they are off.....lots of bickering between the two this week. The Scotsmans gets bored and doesn't think this movie is worth reviewing on the podcast, "not even a popcorn film" he says. Shots fired! It gets worse....the Aussie burps into the microphone! In the film, Beane (Brad Pitt) and assistant general manager Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), faced with the franchise's limited budget for players, build a team of undervalued talent by taking a sophisticated sabermetric approach to scouting and analyzing players. This is one of the Aussie's favourite movies. And in fairness to him it was nominated for 6 Acadamy awards although it didn't win any. The Scotsman is bored by this movie. and he makes that obvious throughout. But if you love sports and fantasize about being a sports manager. Then this is exactly the type of movie for you. Interesting due to the biographical nature of the story. This story changed the convention of sports team management. It is a polarising movie - either you will love it or hate it. The Aussie gives the Scotsman gives a hard time and calls him "disrespectful' a few times - probably deserved. Let us know what you think. This week we are reviewing the 2024 biographical legal thriller The Correspondent directed by Kriv Stenders. The film stars Richard Roxburgh, Julian Maroun, Rahel Romahn, Yael Stone, and Mojean Aria. The plot focuses on Australian foreign correspondent and journalist Peter Greste, who was arrested in Cairo and held in an Egyptian prison, and is adapted from Greste's 2017 memoir The First Casualty. The Correspondent was released in Australia in April 2025. The Aussie and The Scotsman went to the Sun Theatre in Yarraville to watch a preview of the movie which was followed by a Q and A session with Peter Greste, Richard Roxburgh and Kriv Senders. This podcast does not start off the way you would expect it. The Scotsman starts off by opening up about his childhood as a precursor to a connected story. It gets emotional and there are tears from both the boys. Once we get through the first half of the podcast we are off and running - the movie itself is fantastic. And it was great to hear from the actor, the director and Peter Greste. This is an engaging claustrophobic depiction of Peter's time in jail and his appearances in court. You don't need to watch the movie before you listen - the story is all over the internet. This week we review the 2007 American period drama film There Will Be Blood written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, loosely based on the 1927 novel Oil! by Upton Sinclair. It stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano, Kevin J. O'Connor, Ciarán Hinds, and Dillon Freasier. The film was nominated for eight awards at the 80th Academy Awards, winning two (Best Actor for Day-Lewis and Best Cinematography) and received numerous other accolades. It has since been widely regarded as one of the greatest films of the 21st century. The film follows Daniel Plainview (Day-Lewis), a silver miner turned oilman, as he embarks on a ruthless quest for wealth during the Californian oil boom between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Scotsman kicks off with his own Daniel Plainview rant on dogparks, hot sauce and his non-conversational podcast partner. The movie itself is sensational - anything with Daniel Day Lewis is hard to beat. Absolutely worth a watch - don't need to watch before you listen. And if you want to hear the Scotsman get the most tongue-tied he has ever been tune in till the end - his summary needs to be heard....what is he talking about!
