This week we review the 1980 psychological horror film The Shining produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. It is based on Stephen King's 1977 novel of the same name and stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd and Scatman Crothers. The film presents the descent into insanity of a recovering alcoholic and aspiring novelist (Nicholson) who takes a job as winter caretaker for a haunted resort hotel with his wife (Duvall) and clairvoyant son (Lloyd). No secrets here - this is in the Scotsman top 5 of all time. One of Jack Nicholsons best. And he goes through this movie in detail. While the podcast does not start off well - it picks up and we have a great discussion. This is a serious show for a serious movie and the Scotsman takes this one very seriously copying most of Nicholsons lines. This is definitely another must watch before you listen. We deep dive into the performances and ask ourselves what it must take for a performer to get themselves into such a state. Great trivia in this one - a must for all movie (and Jack Nicholson) fans. This week we discuss the 2001 American crime thriller film Training Day directed by Antoine Fuqua. It stars Denzel Washington in his Oscar winning role as Alonzo Harris and Ethan Hawke (who was nominated for best supporting actor) as Jake Hoyt, two LAPD narcotics officers followed over a 24-hour period in the gang-ridden neighborhoods of South Central Los Angeles. Buckle up for this one. The Aussie had not seen this one - did he like it? You bet he did - although he still manages to pick holes in it and thought it was as predictable as it gets - the Scotsman did not think so. This is an exciting, explosive movie one of Denzels best. "This is not Shakespeare" says the Aussie, and he is right this is just pure entertainment. We run through Denzel's movies and Ethan's movies - what a list they both have but Denzel is right up there. This week we review the 2018 biographical comedy-drama film directed by Peter Farrelly. Starring Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali, the film is inspired by the true story of a 1962 tour of the Deep South by African American pianist Don Shirley and ItalianAmerican bouncer and later actor Frank "Tony Lip" Vallelonga, who served as Shirley's driver and bodyguard. Written by Farrelly alongside Lip's son Nick Vallelonga and Brian Hayes Currie, the film is based on interviews with Lip and Shirley, as well as letters Lip wrote to his wife It is named after The Negro Motorist Green Book, a guide book for African American travelers founded by Victor Hugo Green in 1936 and published until 1966. We kick off with a funny interaction where the Scotsman reads out some of the Aussies terrible spelling mistakes. The Aussie picked this one to watch this week and boy does he love it. We know he loves a true story and this hits the spot in all areas. High praise indeed and as winner of the best movie Oscar it is definitely worth a watch. We compare Mahershala's best supporting actor award for his performance in Moonlight to his Oscar winning performance in this movie. The Scotsman compares the chemistry of Ali and Mortensen to De Niro and Pacino at which point the Aussie zones out. Too high brow for him it seems. He just enjoyed the movie. The Aussie talks about the tortured soul of Don Shirley and the boisterous personality of Tony Lip. Lots of racist stereotyping and fascinating insight into a time that we hope has passed but really in some areas of the world we think that kind of prejudice is still prevalent. A fantastic film. This podcast is dedicated to our great mates Justin (31) and Scott (21) who passed away way too early. This week we review the 1995 American crime film Heat written and directed by Michael Mann. It features an ensemble cast led by Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, with Tom Sizemore, Jon Voight, and Val Kilmer in supporting roles. The film follows the conflict between an LAPD detective, played by Pacino, and a career thief, played by De Niro, while also depicting its effect on their professional relationships and personal lives. We are delighted to welcome Simon in this studio. Simon is a friend of both boys and he is here visiting from Perth, WA. Simon did a 3 year undergraduate degree focusing on film and TV for 3 years after his law degree. Making a couple of short films, working on a TV show and studying the history of film. Sit back and listen to this student of film, school-us in how to review a movie with intelligence, depth and real knowledge. The Aussie dominates early on and holds his own, focused on every word that comes out Simon's mouth. This is a movies movie. We discuss the direction, lighting, cinematography, foley effects and "the space between the talking". The Aussie and the Scotsman see this movie as a cops and robbers movie, Simon sees it as a character study. An exploration of the clash of characters. How human nature is sometimes so strong it won't allow us to do the right thing. Sometimes pride and arrogance does get in the way at the detriment of some characters. This week we review the 2024 American biographical musical drama film A Complete Unknown directed by James Mangold, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jay Cocks, about American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. Based on the 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald, the film portrays Dylan through his earliest folk music success until the momentous controversy over his use of electric instruments at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Timothée Chalamet (who also produces) stars as Dylan, with Edward Norton, Elle Fanning and Monica Barbaroy in supporting roles. The film's title is derived from the chorus of Dylan's 1965 single "Like a Rolling Stone". It's a little long but worth a watch if you love this type of music. It is not often we review a current movie released just a few weeks ago. The film earned eight nominations at the 97th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Chalamet, Best Supporting Actor for Norton and Best Supporting Actress for Barbaro. To be held on the 3rd March 2025. The Aussie bursts into song at the end of the podcast and the Scotsman joins him. It's painful and indulgent. This week we review the 1974 American thriller film Jaws directed by Steven Spielberg. One of Spielberg early thrillers and wow - if you've seen it you know. This is about a man-eating great white shark terrorising and chomping beachgoers at a summer resort town. And if you're like the Scotsman it might have put you off ocean swimming for life. 10mins after swimming in the ocean he always hears that famous John Williams 2-note theme tune.....da dum.....da dum.....da dum da dum dadummmm... When Spielberg films the swimmers legs from the murky depths of the water this scares the living hell out of the Scotsman - 40 years after he first watched it and he tells a story at the start about the time he did a shark dive. We talk about Mick Fanning (sorry for calling you Mike on the podcast a few times Mick) and his shark attack - and bizarrely the Aussie compares the shark scene to a scene in Happy Days? The Scotsman burts into song.........and the Aussie realises he may not like the ocean as much as he once did. Do you know this overtook The Godfather in the highest box office takings? An all time Spielberg classic. Highly recommend watching. Find the podcast wherever you get your podcasts from.…
This week we review the 2023 black comedy thriller film Saltburn written, directed, and co-produced by Emerald Fennell, starring Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Alison Oliver, Archie Madekwe and Carey Mulligan. Set in Oxford and Northamptonshire, it focuses on a student at Oxford who becomes fixated with a popular, aristocratic fellow student, who later invites him to spend the summer at his eccentric family's estate. SPOILER ALERT and explicit content warning. This movie has some scenes that have to be seen to be believed. As the Aussie says "this is an after not a during". He grew to love this movie the more we discussed. This is a must watch. (EDIT: It WAS16 years between Oliver and Elspeth meeting - fifteen years had past so Oliver isn't quite yet 40 (per the script he was 19 at the start of the film) and Elspeth is 50's, early 60's) You can comment on our Instagram page or on Spotify under the podcast show in the comment section and we will reply. This week we review the 2014 American science fiction action film Edge of Tomorrow directed by Doug Liman. Starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. The film takes place in a future where most of Europe is occupied by an alien race. Major William Cage (Cruise), a public relations officer with no combat experience, is forced by his superiors to join a landing operation against the aliens, only to find himself experiencing a time loop as he tries to find a way to defeat the invaders. Bill Paxton and Brendan Gleeson also appear in supporting roles. If you haven't seen it it will help if you watch before you listen as we deep dive into this one with cast member, actor, producer and director Kick Gurry who plays Griff. Kick kicks off with Tom Cruise stories and doesn't let up. Story after story after story. Kick tells us about the time when he was doing a scene with Cruise and how Cruise reacted to him being touched. And then the time Kick pranked Tom Cruise over a $50,000 bet! He reminisces about Cruise's sixth sense and the wonderful times he had at the bad with the late Bill Paxton. Oh yea and just that time Tom invited Kick and Bill over to his house to watch a first cut of Edge of Tomorrow. Unbelievable stuff! If you haven't heard our interview with Kick, listen to that first then come back and listen to this. And this week the trivia is FACT CHECKED by the man on the ground. Big thanks to Kick for taking the time to join the Aussie and the Scotsman. What a show! Today, we have an exclusive interview with Australian actor Kick Gurry, right here in our Melbourne studio. Kick has built an impressive career in both Australian and international film and TV, known for his versatility and charismatic screen presence. His breakout role as Jacob Coote in Looking for Alibrandi (2000) brought him critical acclaim, and since then, he's starred in an array of genres, from rom-coms to action films like Garage Days , Spartan alongside Val Kilmer, Speed Racer (2008), Jupiter Ascending (2015), and the blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow (2014) with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. Kick's career continued to flourish as he took on roles in popular American series like Friends from College , 10 Days in the Valley , and Sense 8 . In 2022, he returned to Australia to film Barrons , a show about the origins of the iconic Billabong and Quiksilver surf brands. And just last year, in 2023, he made his debut as a writer, creator, and director with Caught , a hostage comedy series on Stan, which had some challenges with its launch timing. We are thrilled to have Kick here with us today to talk about his journey and what’s next. Welcome, Kick!…
This week we have surprised the Aussie with a Scottish slang word quiz following on from our previous podcast on Trainspotting. Words like "boggin". "numpty", "haver" and "messages". We spell it and put it in a sentence. The Scotsman bursts into song at every given opportunity and Cassie shines. And please, stick around to hear the Aussie do a Scottish accent and Cassie do an Aussie one. Hilarious!!! How will you do? And how do you think the Aussie does? Enjoy!…
This week we review the 1996 British black comedy drama film Trainspotting directed by Danny Boyle, and starring Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, Kevin McKidd, Robert Carlyle and Kelly Macdonald in her film debut. Based on the 1993 novel by Irvine Welsh, the film follows a group of heroin addicts in an economically depressed area of Edinburgh and their passage through life. Beyond drug addiction, other themes in the film include an exploration of the urban poverty and squalor in Edinburgh. The Aussie is outnumbered this week as we welcome another Scotsperson to the studio. Cassie - originally from Edinburgh, and a friend of both, joins the boys to discuss this incredible film. We discuss all things Edinburgh as accents get stronger. The Aussie wants to gloss over the erotic sections of the movie while the Scotsman wants detail. Cassie sorts the boys out and keeps them in check and brings some well needed intellect to the podcast. The Scotsman and Cassie reminisce about 90's Scotland. Some of it is not pretty. There is a dark and grim side to Scotland and this movie tells that tale. Cassie brings a prop to the podcast. That's a first in our podcast forum. Tune in to find out what it is and stick around for the bonus podcast where Cassie and the Scotsman test the Aussie's knowledge of some classic Scottish words. This week we review the 2006 American epic crime thriller film The Departed directed by Martin Scorsese. It is both a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs and also loosely based on the real-life Boston Winter Hill Gang; the character Colin Sullivan is based on the corrupt FBI agent John Connolly, while the character Frank Costello is based on Irish-American gangster and crime boss Whitey Bulger. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, and Mark Wahlberg, with a whose who of supporting cast members. With 4 Oscar wins. The Aussie absolutely loves this one. And boy does he go off. He starts off a little shy but by the end he's spewing profanities left, right and centre. Spoiler alert and parental warning!! The language here is spicy. This is in the top 5 gangster movies along with Casino and Goodfellas - and we compare the movies. This week we discuss the 1997 American drama film Good Will Hunting directed by Gus Van Sant and written by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. The movie stars Affleck and Damon as well as Robin Williams, Stellan Skarsgard, Minnie Driver, Casey Afflect and Cole Hauser. The film tells the story of janitor Will Hunting (Matt Damon), whose mathematical genius is discovered by a professor at MIT (Robin Williams). With 9 Oscar nominatations and winner of Best Screenplay and Best supporting actor for Williams you can see why this movie put Affleck and Damon on the map. However the Scotsman thinks it's dated and the Aussie loves it. This is one of our early podcasts so it's quick and to the point.... The Scotsman doesn't like Mimi Driver the Aussie does. With a "fetish for superheros and a crush on J-Lo" this is just one of The Aussie's statements in this week's podcast. Another early one .
