Hot off the PIO-presses, our resident Jepler created a Python binding for the Raspberry Pi 5 that lets us use the RP1 chip (https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/rp1-the-silicon-controlling-raspberry-pi-5-i-o-designed-here-at-raspberry-pi/) on the 5/500 series boards to drive Neopixels using PIO. This is great because we can now use Neopixels (https://www.adafruit.com/category/168) and friends on the latest Pi boards, and we can use any pin because PIO is not limited by underlying peripherals. You do need the latest kernel and firmware, so it is not quite ready for prime-time, but once piolib (https://github.com/raspberrypi/utils/tree/master/piolib) is more readily available, we'll be able to have folks test this out. This week we got a request on the forums (https://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.php?t=219635) for a way to read PT100/PT1000 RTD sensors over I2C. To be honest, we only really stock the MAX31865 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/MAX31865ATP/3681476) which is SPI only. Let's find a chip that could do RTD reads over I2C: that would require 24-bit precision, but not necessarily high speed! Also ideally it could do differential reads. This week we got Claude working natively on Windows (yay!) which speeds up development since we're not hitting the filesystem through multiple layers. That meant we also worked on a bunch of little breakouts: the BMP585 protos came in and those worked fine. Plus we knocked out the VEML6046 RGB+IR sensor library (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_VEML6046) and started work on a few others. It turns out the bq25628e (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_bq25628e) was not what we wanted in a charger, because ILimit doesn't affect the charge rate, which is like 40mA by default - boo! We'll find another alternative and also try to get back to that bq25798 (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_bq25798) solar charger shortly. We also worked on the e-Ink bonnet, which worked great as rev A and only needed some pinout swaps - thanks to BlitzCity for updating the CircuitPython-api EPD library (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_CircuitPython_EPD) to add support for the bigger 7.5" & friends which we verified on Raspberry Pi and also the Particle Tachyon - speaking of which we are getting Blinka support into main for that board! This week on EYE ON NPI we're featuring some open source hardware from one of our favorite hardware manufacturers! It's the Arduino Nano R4 System on Module (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/arduino/nano-r4) a miniaturized version of the Arduino UNO R4 and Minima (https://blog.adafruit.com/2023/07/27/eye-on-npi-arduino-uno-r4-minima-and-uno-r4-wifi-boards-digikey-arduino-digikey-adafruit/) versions we covered on EYE ON NPI about two years ago! taking a cue from popular 'castellated single side' PCB proto boards on the market, the Nano comes in two options, one with headers (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/arduino/ABX00143/26766495) for easy installation into existing Arduino Nano expansion kits or breadboards, and one with reflowable castellations (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/arduino/ABX00142/26766490) The Arduino Nano (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/arduino/A000005/2638989) is second only to the UNO as the definitive Arduino board that 'everyone got started with'. Many folks would start with the chunky UNO and then migrate to the Nano to get something that plugs into a breadboard for compact assembly. With a USB connector on one end, button and LEDs and programming header on the top, this board powered tens of thousands of builds. So it's not surprising that Arduino iterated on this design with a wide variety of chips like the RP2040 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/arduino/ABX00052/14123941) and ESP32 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/arduino/ABX00092/21219771) The latest generation is the Renesas RA4M1 series - which updates the original ATmega328 8-bit microcontroller to a beefy Cortex M4 with FPU. You get 48MHz clock, 256KB of Flash, 32KB of SRAM, ADC, DAC, CAN, captouch and other extras. The FPU in particular makes it a nice upgrade to the cortex M0/M0+. The best part is that with the 5V logic support of the R7FA4M1AB3CFM (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/renesas-electronics-corporation/R7FA4M1AB3CFM-AA0/10447195), it makes for a great drop-in replacement when a 3V logic chip like the RP2040/ESP32 won't work as well. Plus you get lots of nice linear ADCs, the RP2040 only has 4 and the ESP32's are non-linear and sometimes don't work when WiFi is active. We also love that they added a Qwiic (https://www.sparkfun.com/qwiic) connector on the end! We use this for all our Stemma QT sensors, and between the many companies that have joined in the ecosystem there are easily a thousand different ons/displays/accessories that can plug in directly for instant expansion. Fresh drivers for Bosch BMP5xx sensors & LiPoly chargers, plus Particle Tachyon fun with web-console shell + Blinka support! Also, heat sink tips for TO-220s. This week at our desk we cranked through a whole mess of drivers. Starting with the BMP580/BMP581/BMP585 series, which had a proper Bosch driver library (https://github.com/boschsensortec/BMP5_SensorAPI) so we wrappered it with Claude (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_BMP5xx) to make a nice Adafruit-y library with I2C/SPI and IRQ support. We plan to stock all three variants of the chip since the driver is the same for all. Then we cranked through the bq25628e (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/BQ25628ERYKR/21298592) which is a nice buck-mode LiPoly charger with I2C monitoring and up to 2A rate - the I2C driver (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_bq25628e) was kinda long but it's nice to have monitoring built in so no separate lipoly gas gauge is needed. we're using this as practice while we try to get through the bigger/more complex bq25798 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/BQ25798RQMR/15666783) driver (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_bq25798). We also got more time to play with our Tachyon: one thing that is really impressive is the web-console shell access! It solves a common issue with Pi's where getting initial access can be frustrating. Using the PiStemma (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6365) and the Crickit instructions (https://developer.particle.io/tachyon/accessories/adafruit-crickit-hat) we are able to get Blinka + CircuitPython libraries going. This week on EYE ON NPI we're working without wires - it's the new RM2 module from Raspberry Pi (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/raspberry-pi/radio-module-2-wireless-connectivity) which will let you add 2.4GHz WiFi / Bluetooth LE and Bluetooth Classic over an SDIO interface at a great price. The RM2 is built on the technology stack that Raspberry Pi has been working on for many years in adding built-in wireless to their microcomputers and microcontrollers. For example, starting with the Raspberry Pi 3 (https://www.digikey.com/short/59j9179b), the trading company has been integrating WiFi/Bluetooth to their single-board computers. With tight integration and onboard antenna, it's easy to bring up a new board with networking and native Linux kernel support. To do that, Pi has used the CYW43438 (https://www.digikey.com/short/8pfmdctc) and CYW43455 (https://www.digikey.com/short/99wr3vbq) which supports 2.4G and 5G. When the RP2040 microcontroller chip (https://www.digikey.com/short/bnh55qj4) was released in 2021 along with the Pico board (https://www.digikey.com/short/0p02nwh2) - a year later they came out with the Pico W (https://www.digikey.com/short/bzjt9bcp) for only a few $ more. Instead of trying to design an all-in-one WiFi microcontroller, Pi decided to go the same route they did with the Pi SBC: have a co-processor that adds wireless and then offer the firmware support to make it easy for folks to make IoT projects with a powerful arm Cortex chip. Not surprisingly, the RP2350's Pico 2 also came out with a Pico 2 W (https://www.digikey.com/short/ph2b4dmn) variant pretty quickly. Both W boards have a tinned radio module at the end, reminiscent of the CYW chipsets on the Pi SBCs - in this case they feature the CYW43439 (https://www.digikey.com/short/2tj7twdc) which can do 2.4 GHz WiFi/BT/BLE but not 5GHz to keep the price low. For folks who wanted to built upon the Pico W or 2W with their own design, integrating the CYW43439 (https://www.digikey.com/short/2tj7twdc) is non-trivial: it's a BGA chip which requires adding an antenna, managing traces and impedances as well as getting emitter certifications. So, it's not surprising that Pi trading has designed a standalone module that folks can solder into their designs to take advantage of the high-integration between the RP2 chipset and the CYW43439. The RM2 module (https://www.digikey.com/short/vp58vnh3) comes with antenna, tin and chunky castellated pads that can be pick-and-place'd or hand soldered. We've already seen this module used in some existing designs like the Pico Plus 2W from Pimoroni (https://www.digikey.com/short/rpjcp849). Communication with the CYW43439 (https://www.digikey.com/short/2tj7twdc) inside the module is done over SPI plus some IRQ and reset lines. Note that while, in theory, you could connect this module to any microcontroller with a TCP/IP stack like lwip, it really is only designed and supported with RP2-series microcontrollers. That's because the Pico SDK (https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentation/pico-sdk/networking.html) which integrates the firmware uploading and WiFi stack is not really portable to other microcontrollers and there's a cyw32-driver (https://github.com/georgerobotics/cyw43-driver) that is not open source. We did notice that there's an 'open source' reverse-engineered driver on github (https://github.com/jbentham/picowi) - experimentation will be required for those interested! This week's EYE ON NPI is all about isolation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6x-Nl3_L1pA), it's the XP Power PBT02F Series 2 W DC/DC Converters with SMD Footprint (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/base-product/xp-power/1470/PBT02F/737947)! A compact and easy way to add power isolation to your design without having to muck around with transformer matching and isolation testing. We've covered lots of power supply solutions on EYE ON NPI (https://blog.adafruit.com/tag/eye-on-npi/) including bucks (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEoM5vUjwwI), boosts (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NJzL0jCmfU) and even buck-boosts (https://blog.adafruit.com/2024/08/09/eye-on-npi-analog-devices-max77859-buck-boost-converter-eyeonnpi-digikey-digikey-adi_news/) but we haven't yet covered an isolating chip/module. However, they're so useful when you want to make sure that your electronics are not connected directly to a power supply or Earth ground. This could be for safety reasons: you want to make sure that there is no way for a high voltage from the input to somehow make its way into the output. Or it's used to make sure that a DAQ doesn't have a ground loop. Or maybe you're measuring/controlling a high voltage system from a low voltage - isolating power and data is essential. And speaking of, we often do have to isolate both data and power! Remember that digital and analog signals are always ground referenced so it's no good to have just data or just power isolation: you need them both! Data isolation is a lot easier than power though: you can use optical a-la your common optoisolator (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/category/optocouplers-optoisolators/2058), capacitive (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4903), or even chip scale micro-transformers (https://blog.adafruit.com/2024/03/14/eye-on-npi-analog-devices-adum1252-3-bidirectional-i%C2%B2c-isolators-eyeonnpi-digikey-digikey-adi_news-adafruit/). We have more flexibility because we only have to transfer signal, not actual power: all of those techniques assume that the 'opposite side' of the converter has isolated power ready to go. But that means that we have to do the hard part of actually transferring power over an air-gap. Now if you happen to be isolating AC power, say from 120V or 240V AC mains, this is super easy: just stick a transformer on there (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformer) and you'll magically get isolation with the benefit of also being about to step up or down the voltage. But transformers don't work with DC, so what engineers have to do is create a buck/boost converter that uses a transformer instead of a plain inductor, thus creating the isolated flyback (https://www.xppower.com/storage/documents/technical-articles/PSUTopologies.pdf), a low cost way to transfer a couple watts. The XP Power PBT02F Series (https://www.digikey.com/short/5nh10cq0) come in a few variants, thanks to the built-in buck/boost converter topology. You can input voltages from 3 to 24VDC and get 3 to 15V out. There are even versions with 'split' dual outputs: a nice bonus from having a mid-tapped transformer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Center_tap) that can give you a centered ground reference. And one of my favorite things about it is that the whole transformer-DC/DC comes in a mini sealed pick-and-placeable package that is only 0.5" x 0.42" x 0.35", about the size of a coffee bean! Note the dual-output version is a little chunkier at 0.6" long - maybe like a chocolate-covered coffee bean. We've received several requests to update our low/full-speed USB isolator breakout, which used the ADUM4160. Low speed is for peripherals like mice and keyboards, where bandwidth demands are minimal. Full speed suits microcontrollers, audio interfaces, and simple USB accessories. High speed is needed for flash drives, video devices, data acquisition units, and external disks. This week's EYE ON NPI is ๐ฅhot Hot HOT! We're doing another temperature sensor this week, but this time it's the opposite of a remote Infrared sensor (https://blog.adafruit.com/2025/07/03/eye-on-npi-melexis-mlx90632-miniature-far-infrared-fir-sensors-eyeonnpi-digikey-adafruit-melexis_sensors/): we're covering the Omega Engineering SA1 Series Self-Adhesive Polyimide Fast Response Surface Thermocouple (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/o/omega-engineering/sa1-series-self-adhesive-polyimide-thermocouple) a high quality thermocouple with integrated U-shaped self-adhesive backing that ensures a secure fit on various surfaces and is designed for quick and easy installation. Last week we talked about how to measure the temperature of something without touching it (https://blog.adafruit.com/2025/07/03/eye-on-npi-melexis-mlx90632-miniature-far-infrared-fir-sensors-eyeonnpi-digikey-adafruit-melexis_sensors/), this week we're going to talk about a thermocouple sensor that gets all-up-in-your-personal-space. Why not use a remote sensor? For one, the temperature range is limited: it'll only do up to 200 C, and you need to make sure you have a good close view. Thermocouples are rugged and can easily handle up to and beyond 750 C (https://www.dwyeromega.com/en-us/resources/k-type-thermocouples). They can also be many meters away: their thin wires make it easy to snake into a kiln, or HVAC system. Traditional thermocouples come with just a welded-wire tip (https://www.digikey.com/short/0tttrf8v), or sometimes an encased metal-tip probe (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/omega/SICIN-125G-6/25633429). The latter is good for sticking into fluids or tanks. However, sometimes you want to measure the surface of something like a pipe or plate. Particularly since using a thermocouple implies a wide temperature range, you'll need something better than packing tape. The Omega SA1 Series comes with a 1"x0.75" adhesive pad made of fiberglass, polyamide and silicone glue (https://assets.omega.com/manuals/test-and-measurement-equipment/temperature/sensors/thermocouple-probes/M0503.pdf) that is good up to 177 C. Note that this is below the max rating of a thermocouple, so it's good for remote monitoring of many surfaces but you can't stick it to the inside of an oven and expect it to stay in place. Right now DigiKey is stocking the popular K-Type version (https://www.digikey.com/short/jj30553m) of the SA1 series, but the J, T, E, and M variants are also available for special order (https://www.digikey.com/short/0rw070wd). K-Type tend to be the best supported thermocouple variant, don't forget you'll also need a chip or ADC that can read the millivolt differentials on the thermocouple wires (https://it.omega.com/temperature/pdf/Type-K-Thermocouple-Reference-Table.pdf) and convert that to a temperature reading. This week's EYE ON NPI is tick tock o'clock, it's the Abracon Real-Time Clock with Integrated 32.768 kHz Crystal Oscillator (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/abracon/real-time-clock-with-integrated-32-768-khz-crystal-oscillator). It's a tiny and affordable all-in-one RTC that has everything ya want, and nothin' ya don't. With it's compact package size, it's half the BOM size of what most RTC's need, and has a high quality Abracon crystal (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/abracon) already included! We've been using Abracon (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/abracon) crystals and oscillators in our designs for decades - for example a 12.288 MHz Crystal (https://www.digikey.com/short/w2qvtnbr) adorns our VS1053 breakout board (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1381). Real time clock chips are specialty low-cost chips that keep track of 'real time' (e.g. the month, day, year, hour, minute, second) so that the rest of the system can go into shutdown mode or lose power, without losing track of time. They also often have alarms so that the system can reboot out of deep sleep to perform some task at an assigned delay or timestamp. As you might expect, the important characteristics to look for in an RTC are accuracy - how close their internal timekeeping is to true time - and power draw - how long they can run off the secondary power source such as a super-cap or coin cell battery (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/panasonic-energy/CR-1025-BN/269738). There's other characteristics that you may care about: the voltage range they can power off of, whether they support a secondary battery backup with auto-switchover, and of course the interface and capabilities like alarms The AB-RTC-XB-32.768KHZ-2-T3 (https://www.digikey.com/short/tp4tjzqz) has many of the things we like to look for in an RTC. First, is a standard I2C interface - most RTCs are, and this makes it easy to add to any microcontroller or microcomputer. Second is a wide operating voltage range for power and logic: 1.2V to 5.5V with both a power and IO power pad! That means it's great even for low voltage cores or 5V Arduino-compatibles, and you can have separate voltages if desired. Alongside those two pins there's also a separate VBat pin for backup battery with auto-switchover. That means when the main power cuts off, say because USB got unplugged, or the main Lipoly battery is drained, we'll switch over to a coin cell or super-cap. Of course, the big feature of this RTC is the built-in crystal. By integrating directly, they're able to have an SMT chip with no external crystal in a 3.2 x 2.5mm package - the same size as most crystals! According to the datasheet, the crystal has a 5 ยฑ23ppm frequency stability at room temp 25โ. That translates to 28 ppm max: 86,400 ร (28/1,000,000) = 2.42 seconds gain/loss per day. At the typical 'best case' of 5ppm, its 86,400 ร (5/1,000,000) = 0.432 seconds per day. That's in-line with most RTC crystal specifications, although it wouldn't be considered 'high precision' since its not temperature compensated. Temp compensation is much more complex and expected, and most RTCs will get auto-sync from the controller via WiFi/BT/GPS to apply correction every day~month to get them back on track. This week's EYE ON NPI is going to keep an eye on the hot summer temperatures - it's Melexis' MLX90632 Miniature Far Infrared (FIR) Sensors (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/melexis/mlx90632-miniature-far-infared-fir-sensors) a series of low cost, high performance, ultra tiny IR temperature sensors with medical grade accuracy! The MLX90632 comes from Melexis (https://www.digikey.com/short/zvzvp01b) whose expertise is IR temperature sensors. We've been using their sensors like the MLX90614 (https://www.digikey.com/short/b990pn8w) for over a decade! These sensors are specifically good for sensing the temperature of something that they are not touching. There's lots of reasons to use this, for example when something is really hot, so you don't want your circuit to reach the same temperature which would degrade or damage it. Or for sanitation: unlike in-ear or oral temperature sensing, you can point this at someone's head or mouth to measure their temperature without ickyness. Or maybe you're measuring something that is far away or hard to attach a thermocouple to, for example to measure the temperature of a leaf for calculating the Vapor Pressure Deficit (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vapour-pressure_deficit). For 'single point' measurement, we've used the MLX90614 (https://www.digikey.com/short/b990pn8w), they've also got the MLX90640 (https://www.digikey.com/short/8pf5zrq8) which is more like a camera, with 32x24 pixel IR camera support. Both are way cheaper than a full FLIR camera module, and we love the I2C interface which makes it easy to interface with any microcontroller or microcomputer. However, what we really wanted is something more affordable and hopefully even surface-mount-friendly. After a bit of searching this week we bumped into the MLX90632 (https://www.digikey.com/short/zvzvp01b) which has everything we've wanted! First up, unlike the other IR sensors we've used, the MLX90632 (https://www.digikey.com/short/zvzvp01b) is compact and surface mountable - that makes assembly fast and easy without hand soldering and lead-clipping. Second, it's got an I2C interface so we don't have to do any analog noodling to convert a current to temperature. It's also pre-calibrated so you can use it right 'out of the box' like classic non-IR temperature sensors. There's versions for both 3.3V or 1.8V power/logic, so you can pop it into your circuit with ease. And if you're using for human/animal temperature monitoring, the medical-grade version is factory calibrated with an accuracy of ยฑ0.2หC within the narrow object temperature range from 35 to 42หC. Note that both 'standard' and 'medical' grade have different accuracy zones, and as you get to the extremes from 25C, the accuracy in C will rise to +-4C: its a trade-off between range and accuracy. Just note that you need to tell the sensor which mode you want to be in, over I2C Speaking of - this sensor is I2C compatible! So it's easy to interface this using C, Arduino, Python, etc. Check out the register map in the datasheet - you will need to read the pre-programmed calibration constants in order to convert readings to ambient/remote temperatures. There's also built in EEPROM that you can program with offsets or to change the I2C peripheral address, handy if you have device-specific settings that you want to tie to the individual sensor for custom calibration. (Re-broadcast, LIVE was not working for all social media on Sunday night, so here ya go! This week at our desk, we spent a lot of our focused engineering time working on e-paper display drivers. These displays are a lot more annoying than TFTs, which have settled on standardized MIPI command sets. Also, they have custom "waveforms" used to configure the refresh technique. By default, we use the built-in waveforms from OTP memory, but it's possible to load new waveforms, letting us do funky stuff like coax 4-grayscale out of a "monochrome" display. We also designed a simple moisture sensor PCB for an ultra-low-cost kit to be used by studentsโsometimes it's okay to under-design for cost reasons!โฆ

For our E-Ink display breakout boards, we add an SRAM chip onboard to help buffer the display. Unlike TFTs that have built-in video RAM, EPDs require writing the full memory at onceโwhich can get into multi-KBs. For many modern chips, up to 64KB of video RAM isn't a big deal, but for small, low-cost micros like Arduino, that's a lot! Since EPDs are slow anyway, we can use an external SRAM chip for fast write/readโan ideal solution. This week's EYE ON NPI is locked in and latched on - it's CIT Relay and Switch's L115F2 Series Latching 50 A Relays, (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/cit/l115f2-series-latching-50-a-relays) a great way to control high voltage and currents, at a great price, and with the benefit of a latching control system so you don't need nearly as much current when activating as standard relays. We've covered relays a few times on EYE ON NPI (https://blog.adafruit.com/2023/08/03/eye-on-npi-sensata-crydoms-series-1-ac-panel-mount-solid-state-relays-eyeonnpi-digikey-sensata-digikey-adafruit/) there's thousands of different types stocked at DigiKey, for every kind of configuration and power usage. We've even seen solid state relays (https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/01/07/eye-on-npi-te-ssrmp-series-solid-state-relays-eyeonnpi-digikey-teconnectivity-digikey/) that don't have a mechanical component. But, if you're designing something that isn't meant to switch more than 10,000 times in its lifetime, you can keep your costs low by sticking to the tried and true mechanical relay. The only thing you might like is the upgrade of a Latching-type relay such as the L115F2 series (https://www.digikey.com/short/372fdpvv). Most relays (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/power-relays-over-2-amps/188?s=N4IgjCBcoLQdIDGUBmBDANgZwKYBoQB7KAbRACYAWSgThAF0BfRg80kAJxwzQE8HGQA) are simple on-off types, when you put current through the electromagnet, it attracts the relay contacts to switch from the Normally-Closed side to Normally-Open making the circuit. The moment the current is removed, the electromagnet turns off, and the relay switches back off. That means, you have to keep that current going for as long as you want the circuit to close. For some relays, that can be quite a bit of power: it's not unusual to need up to 200mA at 5V. If you're running on battery power, or if you want to keep your power supply budget from getting sucked up, you can swap to a latching relay. These have a 'bi-directional' electromagnet, and a plastic latching system so when you put current through one way, it will turn on and stay on. To turn off the relay, swap the polarity of the electromagnet so current goes the other way: that will unlatch the relay and turn it off. The mechanical construction is a little more expensive than a standard relay, and you'll need an H-bridge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H-bridge) to control the electromagnet, but you only need current for that short pulse. The CIT Relay and Switch's L115F2 Series (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/cit/l115f2-series-latching-50-a-relays) are available in a range of configurations: with coil rated voltages of 5/12/24/48V, so you can use with whatever your native power system is. In both SPST and SPDT contacts, and either 30A, 40A or 50A rated current. There's also two size versions, the slim one still has the spade contacts on the top but they stick out rather than being sunken in the relay body..
