It's probably a lot more than we know at the moment." - Jaap de Roode Jaap de Roode is a biology professor at Emory University, and he is the author of an astonishing new book called Doctors by Nature How Ants, Apes, and Other Animals Heal Themselves . I say astonishing because I had no idea about so much of what he explores in his book. It never occured to me to consider that other species use medicine and have been healing themselves forever. Jaap tells stories of animals across nature, from bumblebees to chimpanzees, how they use plants and natural substances to treat infections, to ward off parasites, to self-medicate. There's so much that we have learned from them, and there's so much more that we still can.…

What happens when privately-owned apartment buildings need upgrade? Multiple owners - all with their own ideas - can mean it's easier to sell and move, rather than refurbish. But two Sydney researchers want to change that - and give architects and homeowners the tools they need to co-design a new life for old apartment buildings. We sat down with UNSW's Dr Hazel Easthope and University of Sydney's Dr Sandra Loschke to unpack their vision for a more participatory and sustainable approach to apartment redevelopment - research which is being supported by the NSW ARB. Moments after being awarded the Architects Medallion at a ceremony held at the NSW Architects Registration Board, we sat down Eric Ye to talk about his ideas, aspirations and practice. The Architects Medallion has been awarded by the Board since 1924 to a graduate from a NSW school of architecture who has achieved distinction in their studies. Eric Ye is a graduate from the University of Technology Sydney, and he was awarded not just for his outcomes in design studio, but also for his leadership in the co-creation of the Post- publication, and his inclusive work as a tutor of architecture. On top of that, Eric has received numerous awards, and has featured at the Oslo Triennale. He currently works at Andrew Burges Architects and is a casual academic at UTS.…
