The US Transport Secretary has said the crash between a helicopter and passenger jet approaching Washington DC was “absolutely preventable”. The plane was carrying 64 passengers and crew when it crashed into the Potomac River after the collision, along with the military helicopter. The helicopter had three people on board, who were labelled a "fairly experienced crew" by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth. Figure skaters from the US and Russia were among passengers on the aeroplane, according to officials from US Figure Skating and a club in Boston. Authorities searching the freezing waters of the Pototomac say there are no survivors and they are conducting a recovery operation. People in Greece are holding their biggest protests for years and taking part in a general strike to mark the second anniversary of a rail disaster that left 57 dead and dozens more injured. Tempers have flared and clashes have broken out with police, while bombs were thrown and police used tear gas. On 28 February 2023, a passenger train packed with students collided head-on with a goods train near the Tempi gorge in central Greece. An inquiry concluded on Thursday that the accident was caused by human error, poor maintenance, and inadequate staffing. "Those children were killed because the train was not safe," said Christos Papadimitriou, chief of Greece's Air and Rail Accident Investigation Authority. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer met US President Donald Trump during his first visit to the White House on Thurday. Following the meeting, Trump said “a real trade deal” between the US and UK could happen "very quickly”, which could see the UK avoid the kind of tariffs the US has been threatening on some of its trading partners. Later today, Trump is due to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington, where the pair will hash out and potentially sign a much-discussed minerals deal. It comes after yesterday's news conference, where Trump was asked by the BBC's Chris Mason if he stuck by his claim that Zelensky is a "dictator", to which the he replied: “Did I say that? I can't believe I said that. Next question”. Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/1rbfUog For more news, analysis and features visit: www.bbc.com/news #US #UK #BBCNews…

President Trump has been invited to the UK for a second state visit by King Charles. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer used his trip to the White House to present Trump with the invitation letter from the King. Sir Keir said the president's last state visit in 2019 had been a "tremendous success" and that the invite for a second visit was "truly historic" and "unprecedented". Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office after reading the letter, Trump said he accepted the invite and that it would be an "honour" to visit the "fantastic" country. He added that King Charles was a "beautiful man, a wonderful man". Traditionally second-term US presidents are not offered a state visit and have instead been invited for tea or lunch with the monarch at Windsor Castle. Sir Starmer presented the letter from the King to President Trump, during their first meeting since his return to the White House for a second term. The leaders discussed Ukraine, with Sir Keir hoping to persuade the US to provide a military “backstop” to any European peacekeeping force deployed in the country. They also talked about trade, with the British government hoping to avoid tariffs which Mr Trump is planning to impose on other countries. Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Chris Mason, Faisal Islam and Sarah Smith. US President Donald Trump says he thinks there will be a Ukraine peace deal and a US-UK trade deal after talks with UK PM Keir Starmer at the White House. On Ukraine, Trump said a ceasefire will be agreed "soon" or "won't be at all." He also said he respects President Zelensky and praised his military: "They have fought very bravely... somebody has to use that equipment and they have been very brave." On a UK trade deal Trump said, "I think we could very well end up with a real trade deal where the tariffs wouldn't be necessary." When asked by the BBC's Chris Mason if he still thinks Ukraine's President Zelensky is a dictator - Trump replied: "Did I say that? I can't believe I said that. Next question." 1 Tate brothers arrive in Florida after Romanian prosecutors agreed to let them leave | BBC News 4:52
Self-described misogynist Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan have landed in Florida after Romanian prosecutors agreed to let them leave. The brothers were arrested in Romania three years ago and face trial on allegations of rape, trafficking minors and money laundering - all of which they deny. Romanian prosecutors have said the case has not been dropped - and they are expected to return to Romania, understood to be at the end of next month. Four British women who have accused Andrew Tate of sexual abuse in a separate civil case in the UK have said they are in "disbelief and feel re-traumatised" by news of him leaving Romania. Thousands of former workers who have been freed from telecom fraud centres on the Thai-Myanmar border are now stranded in makeshift camps. The labourers - from countries around the world - were lured to these centres by fake promises of good jobs. The armed militia groups who are now holding them have a very limited capacity to support so many people. One of them has said they have stopped freeing people from the compounds because they are not being moved to Thailand fast enough. The BBC understands that conditions in the camps are unsanitary, food barely sufficient, and many of the people are in poor health. 1 Israel releases Palestinian prisoners after Hamas hands over four hostages' bodies | BBC News 6:51
Hamas has handed over what it says are the bodies of four Israeli hostages from Gaza, in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Early on Thursday, Israel began releasing more than 600 Palestinian prisoners, with dozens returned to the occupied West Bank and Gaza, where they were met by jubilant crowds. President Trump has confirmed that there will be no significant US security guarantee for Ukraine, despite agreement on a deal to exploit the country's minerals. Speaking at his first full cabinet meeting since re-taking the White House, Mr Trump said Europe, not the US must underwrite Ukraine’s future security. Mr Trump also confirmed the US was signing a “very big agreement” with Ukraine for access to its mineral resources. He said it would to amount to around $300 billion. President Zelensky, who is due to fly to Washington on Friday, said that without security guarantees there would be no justice and no real ceasefire in Ukraine.
