Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 11 Episode 08 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Thursday morning 10 October 2024.
Happy Fiji Day!
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is a cool 22 degrees Celsius again at 5am this morning.
In Rugby League: Papua New Guinea’s push to join the NRL is growing stronger.
PNG Prime Minister James Marape attended Sunday’s NRL Grand Final in Sydney and met with Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese and NRL powerbrokers.
“I am happy with the progress so far,” Marape said.
“There are a few more regulatory processes to complete before an official announcement can be made, but the future is looking bright for our national team.”
In Football: Eight points in seven games, including two wins over Fulham and Southampton, and just five goals scored, means 2024-25 is the worst start Manchester United has made in three decades.
However, according to the Guardian there is no indication from within Old Trafford that Erik Ten Hag will be sacked, despite the Dutchman being under immense pressure.
In the NFL: The New York Jets have fired Head Coach Robert Saleh after a 2–3 start to the season.
In four seasons with the Jets, Saleh had a 20–36 record - his .357 winning percentage ranks in the bottom 25 for head coaches in NFL history.
The Jets will have to swallow the remainder of his contract, which has one more year to go after this season, at an estimated US$5Million cost.
And in the WNBA: Caitlin Clark’s rapid rise in women’s basketball has shown no signs of slowing down.
The Indiana Fever star’s latest accolade - the WNBA’s Rookie of the Year award, announced last Thursday - is just the latest cherry on top of an impressive year on and off the court.
Caitlin won 66 out of 67 votes, with rival Angel Reese receiving the remaining vote.
Finally in Boxing: Trail-blazing Irish fighter, Katie Taylor will earn US$6Million when she fights Puerto Rican-born, US-based multi-weight World Champion Amanda Serrano in November in the rematch of the greatest women’s fight of all time.
Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano has been confirmed as the co-main event with the controversial Mike Tyson versus Jake Paul clash, at the home of the Dallas Cowboys - the 80,000-seat Arlington Stadium in Texas.
The event will be broadcast on streaming giant Netflix at no extra charge – and so available free to hundreds of millions of homes all around the world.
Their first encounter, a modern-day classic, was the first female fight to top a bill at the famous Madison Square Garden venue and played out in front of 20,000 fans in the arena, with a record-breaking 1.5 million tuning in to watch on DAZN.
And that’s a wrap peeps!
