This session shares the Franklin (MA) School Committee meeting held on Tuesday, Nov 12, 2024. All 7 members participated, 6 in Council Chambers, 1 remotely (Gallagher)

Quick recap:

School committee voted to continue their leadership team. Griffin was nominated as well as Callaghan for Chair but Callaghan prevailed with a 5-2 (Griffin, Gallagher) vote. McNeill continues as Vice-Chair by a 7-0 vote. Both votes via roll call
Announcement of MASS student awards for Ella Mahoney and Noah Gorgas
Middle school presentation & update; If we had more money we could have more clubs and reach more students and their interests Hopeful with the single school next year to be able to do more for the whole population of middle schoolers, more flexibility and opportunities
Update on the district reorganization From Colin & Lucas
29 of the 54 possible students for the DT exemption committed to do so, Staff placement being worked, All dependent upon the budget
Pond St facility (former Kennedy school) would be the site for an expansion for the ECDC not a replacement of, ECDC was purpose built and will remain, but expanding capacity by using space at Pond St is what is being planned
Clarification on ECDC expansion, it would be done in phases, the focus is to provide the education space for ECDC population, which is growing, and we won't be able to utilize the Middle school space we have used at Horace Mann
Key stat 97% of the K-5 teachers got their first choice. There is the plus one for 2nd at North and down one on South so it is budget neutral not a $75K cost as might have been in worst case
Consideration for moving staff and furniture with the teachers where possible, Capital planning underway, don't know enough details yet but as they rise up, they will be shared

This session shares the audio of the Police Station Building Committee (PSBC) meeting on Tuesday, Feb 25, 2025. This is the first meeting of 2025. The full project team, OPM, and architects provided an overview of the process and what next steps were starting. Quick recap: Discussion on how many 3 or 4 open houses for public to visit the station to see the existing conditions and need for new space Discussion on how many site visits to other new police facilities, likely 3 so at least the committee members could try and make at least 2 of the 3 Presentation on template of project webpage, still in draft, discussion around what to add to it Discussion around the video walk through to be coordinated by Steve Sherlock/Franklin TV. Would enable residents who can’t make the open houses to still see the situation. Discussion on 3 sites, one just rose along Grove St but won’t be considered further as it is too small. Davis Thayer and Parmenter remain currently under evaluation Town administrator Jamie Hellen made a clear statement on the deed for the Parmenter property that nothing in it prohibits another use. The requirement at the time was to build a school within 3 years, and that was completed. There were no penalties or clawbacks in the deed in case the conditions weren’t met Not likely to meet again as a committee until summer time. This session of the radio show shares my conversation with Laura Doherty , Franklin Food Pantry Associate Director. We had our conversation at the Franklin Food Pantry at Edwin’s. Laura provides a brief story on her road to The Pantry then we get to talk about The Pantry Strategic Plan. It was funded by a grant from the MetroWest Health Foundation specifically for use in building capacity. The Pantry developed the strategic plan with involvement of multiple stakeholders groups and is now able to bring the plan to life. The recent holiday meal distribution is one example of how the strategic plan led to the enhancements that resulted in almost 1,000 meals distributed during Nov & Dec 2024. Disclosure: during the conversation you will hear that I was previously on the Food Pantry Board. I am currently volunteering on a couple of committees to help the Food Pantry mission.
