24.208 | THE STONE IS ROLLED AWAY | Mark 16:1-8 | God’s Word for Today with Pastor Nazario Sinon

God’s Word for Today

29 Aug, 2024

When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2 And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3 And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—it was very large. 5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. 6 And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.” 8 And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Mark 16:1-8 ESV

THE STONE IS ROLLED AWAY

Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome are here to add to the fragrances Nicodemus used for Jesus’ body. Nicodemus had brought seventy-five pounds of myrrh and aloes. [Luke 23:56] Let’s recall that the disciples and the women supported Jesus ministry(Luke 8:1–3) They followed Him from Galilee to the Mount of Olives for the Passover (Mark 15:41).

They came to the tomb when the light would have just started to creep into the sky. It could be around 5:00 a.m. and be fully above the horizon at around 6:30 a.m. John says the women come "while it was still dark" (John 20:1); Luke says, "at early dawn" (Luke 24:1); Matthew says, "toward the dawn" (Mat 28:1).

Along the way, they were asking, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” It was huge. It’s estimated to be 1 to 2 tons in weight. Moreover, A cord would have been placed where the stone meets the rockface, and wax poured over the seam. No one would have been able to move the stone without breaking the wax. In short, there was no way the women can move the stone by themselves.

Before the women arrived, Pilate has sealed the stone to the rock face and set guards so that Jesus' followers cannot disturb the scene (Mat 27:62–66). When an angel came down and rolled away the stone, the guards froze or fainted in terror. After the women leave, the guards go to the chief priests to explain what happened. The priests bribe them to say they fell asleep and the disciples stole Jesus' body.

They were greatly surprised when they saw the stone was rolled away. The angel moved it for them to see the empty tomb, not for Jesus to go out. They saw an angel dressed in white robe and they were alarmed. He told them not to fear. Jesus is risen and they are to meet Him in Galilee. They have to tell the disciples right away. They went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. Why they have such reactions?

Let us not be quick to criticize these women for being doubtful, fearful, not believing the angel, We ought to be sympathetic because at many times we also have doubts and unbeliefs. They did not expect Jesus to be alive. They were bringing ointments to anoint His body. Are we not like them in many ways? They heard the truth but they did not believe. They were skeptical about Jesus’ rising from dead.
