A native of Detroit, Michigan, he received SB and SM degrees from MIT, and a PhD in Planetary Sciences from the University of Arizona. He has served as an officer in the International Astronomical Union, the American Astronomical Society, and the Meteoritical Society. Along with 300 scientific publications, he is the author of a dozen popular books on astronomy and the relationship between faith and science.
