Big thought:

Accountability usually sounds restrictive to the person who is being accountable because can make you feel like you are putting yourself in a box or positioning yourself to having to ask permission. But that is not what we are talking about today. Choosing to find someone to be accountable to is choosing to ask someone to help you achieve greater results in your life and leadership.

In today’s episode, I’m going to explain what healthy accountability should look like (and not look like) and then I’m going to unpack the two main reasons as to why you should seek out accountability.

1. What Accountability IS and ISN’T.

In order for accountability to really work, you have to actually talk to someone on a regular basis. You may even want to have different layers of accountability, each with a different person who helps you. For example: someone you check-in with daily via text; someone you check-in weekly with a 30 min phone call; someone you check-in monthly with an 1hr phone call; someone you check in quarterly with a video call; or someone you check-in with annually with an in-person meeting. All of these are simply examples to help get you started. I would suggest that you start with someone weekly talking on the phone and adapt from there according to your needs and ambitions.

2. Accountability Protects You.

Just knowing that you’re going to talk to someone about what you may or may not do helps motivate you to make more rational choices. Especially if you’re struggling with giving into temptation, having accountability will help strengthen your will-power. Your level of transparency will determine your level of victory.

3. Accountability Helps Drive You.

Again, we’re not talking about someone who beats you up if you fall short. We’re talking about someone who cares about you and wants to see you win. Yes, you can still achieve your goals just on your own, but having accountability simply helps you in the moments that you are tired or feeling off. And we all get days and seasons in which our game and motivation feels off. Accountability is simply helping assure that you’re going to achieve what you want.

Take away:

1. Write down a list of 3-5 things that you want to protect yourself from through accountability.

2. Write down 3-5 habitual or accomplish centric goals that you want to achieve.

3. Establish 1-3 people to be accountable to with a frequency and type of communication.
