The amazing story of the Kadouri and Sassoon families. These two Jewish families rose at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century to be among the wealthiest and most influential families that shaped the image of Shanghai as the cosmopolitan and bohemian center of Asia. Professor Jonathan Kaufman, veteran and respected journalist, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and Director of the School of Journalism at Northeastern University tells in English about what led him to write the great book "Kings of Shanghai" which was recently translated into Hebrew and published by "Matar" and tells the story of Kaduri and Shashon families. He recounts the in-depth research process he conducted before writing the book, the story of the families from Iraq, through India, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, including the opium trade, the bohemian parties for the rich and famous, the important role of women in shaping the families' histories, the aid to tens of thousands of Jewish refugees who fled the Nazis, and the connections to the state of Israel.
