Lockheed Achieves Milestone in Unmanned Naval Aviation

Lockheed Martin, the U.S. Navy, and General Atomics achieved a groundbreaking milestone in unmanned aviation with the first live control flight of a drone using the Unmanned Carrier Aviation Mission Control Station. The demonstration involved the General Atomics MQ-20 Avenger, an unmanned combat aircraft, controlled via Lockheed Skunk Works’ Multi-Domain Combat System autonomy platform. This system, developed by Skunk Works, offers autonomy, mission planning, and command capabilities. Navy pilots in Maryland successfully controlled the MQ-20 in California, showcasing beyond line-of-sight capabilities. This test marks a significant step in developing the control station, crucial for future Navy unmanned operations. John Clark of Skunk Works highlighted the collaboration's success in integrating the MQ-20 with UMCS, demonstrating common control and third-party platform integration. Lt. Steven Wilster emphasized the demo's importance in advancing unmanned naval aviation, crucial for addressing current and future threats.
