When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. Learn more at www.lbi.org/kollisch . Exile is a production of the Leo Baeck Institute , New York | Berlin and Antica Productions . It’s narrated by Mandy Patinkin. Executive Producers include Katrina Onstad, Stuart Coxe, and Bernie Blum. Senior Producer is Debbie Pacheco. Associate Producers are Hailey Choi and Emily Morantz. Research and translation by Isabella Kempf. Sound design and audio mix by Philip Wilson, with help from Cameron McIver. Theme music by Oliver Wickham. Voice acting by Natalia Bushnik. Special thanks to the Kollisch family for the use of Eva’s two memoirs, “Girl in Movement” and “The Ground Under My Feet”, the Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College and their “Voices of Feminism Oral History Project”, and Soundtrack New York.…

New phones, new smart speakers, new… er, microwaves. The ‘big four’ US tech companies all held their annual hardware announcements in the last month, which gives some indication of their plans for the near future. In this episode, regular hosts Gordon and Peter are joined by Camille for a discussion about what it all might mean for digital technology, and how privacy and security factor into consumer trust.…
From Amazon’s Echo Show to Google’s Smart Displays, the latest wave of smart speakers brings a new element into play: screens. In the latest episode regular hosts Gordon, Peter and Rosie are joined by Yogi Patel to discuss what might be motivating the move back to screens. Recorded on a hot day in a small room.…
Both Facebook and Google held their developer conferences in the past few weeks, where they announced (some of) their plans for the year ahead—from computers with eyes to social VR. Gordon, Peter and Rosie have a natter about the new features and products they were most excited by, and their overall impression of the announcements.…
In this episode of our tech talks we’re joined by Duaa Al-Uzairy to discuss how cosmetics and fashion brands are very progressive in their use of new consumer technologies, from augmented reality to computer vision.
Gordon, Peter and Rosie back again to talk about the tech trends they’re excited about for 2018. Computer vision for fashion, the convergence of different interfaces, advertising, and more besides. Featuring an improvement on the sound quality of the past few podcasts.
Debating the utility—or, the promise of utility—of blockchain; not everyone’s convinced. With guests Ryan Grieve and Modestas Pocius, and co-hosted by Zuzanna Rosinska with Gordon and Peter.
In this episode we’re talking about computer vision, or “computers with eyes”. No Rosie, but we’re ably compensated by talking to rehab’s own Camille Bourdier and Zuzanna Rosinska. Plus special guest Léonie Watson of the Paciello Group joins us to talk about how computer vision aids accessibility and brings new opportunities to users with vision impairment.…
Talking about the home smart speaker market, including Amazon Echo and Google Home, and a conversation with our Creative Lead and nominated Woman of the Future, Amy Durrant.
Our Strategy Director, Gabriella Rothenberg, joins Gordon, Peter, and Rosie to talk about persuasive technology: the use of tech in order to change peoples habits or attitudes towards certain behaviours. Lots of talk about annoying notifications.
Facebook launching ads in Messenger leads us to talk about ads, ad blocking, and how brands might need to change to reach their customers. Features an interview with an *actual Millennial*. NB: at 03:15 Peter said ‘Safari’ when he meant ‘Chrome’, which is really annoying him.
