Xavier Marton, a timid and neurotic man who works as a toy salesman, approaches Maigret with a peculiar concern. Marton believes that his wife, Gisèle, is plotting to kill him. However, Marton is hesitant, unsure whether his fears are genuine or the result of paranoia. He seems equally unsure about whether he actually wants Maigret to intervene or simply to confirm his suspicions. This hesitation and the oddity of the case prompt Maigret to take a closer look.
