When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. Parents across the globe differ in age, culture, faiths, political allegiance, and personal standards, but they would generally agree that we must protect our children from any threat. We are to protect them from dangerous situations and dangerous people (including themselves!) but today, a mutated threat has emerged with breakneck speed and incredible complexity: social media. It is many things at once: useful and useless, helpful and detrimental, empowering and enslaving. Such is the concern about this technology that in late January of 2024, U.S. lawmakers grilled the CEOs of the most popular social media platforms to discover what can be done to protect vulnerable children from its malicious capabilities. On this episode of the Removing Barriers podcast, we will discuss a portion of this senate judiciary hearing. Does the Bible have anything to say on the subject, or is it too old and unrelatable? How can we protect ourselves and our children from the often corrosive effects of social media? Confidence was at an all-time low and suddenly, homeschooling was not just for fundies, zealots, hippies, and conspiracy theorists. Parents began to see it for what it was all along: a reasonable course of action for the education of their children. But is homeschooling the best option? Should we be encouraging parents to educate their children when most of them are not trained educators? What about socialization and extracurricular activities? Chile is a long, narrow, beautiful strip of land in South America spanning from the base of Peru all the way down to the tip of the continent, and jumping the ocean to claim certain parts of Antartica. The people groups are diverse, but the need is the same: a saving faith and growing relationship with the Creator, the Lord Jesus Christ. Geoffrey Fahringer would have never in a million years seen himself as a missionary because he was far along the path of military service and law enforcement. But after the Lord saved him, it became increasingly clear that God had plans for his family in that beautiful country. Geoffrey and his family surrendered, and today we get to hear all about what God has been doing to bring a gospel witness to the people there. Having originated in the Indian subcontinent over 2,500 years ago, Hinduism is practiced by more than one billion people worldwide, 96% percent of which live in India. Hinduism came under the neon lights of American public discourse and scrutiny with Vivek Ramaswamy's candidacy for president in the 2024 election (see episode 142). What is Hinduism, and what do Hindus believe? Is it compatible with Christianity or does it stand in stark contrast? On this episode of the Removing Barrier podcast, we sit down with Jacob to answer these questions and come to a better understanding of that faith. Jacob is a stalwart Christian and, having been born and raised in India, has a more thorough understanding of Hinduism and how it differs from Christianity. We don't need a bad meme to know that of all the nations on earth, the United States is the only one with the right to keep and bear arms enshrined in the law of the land with absolutely no restrictions. There are more guns than people in the U.S., and the number of gun owners in any other nation pales in comparison. But the United States is also in significant moral decline, and the absolute tragedy of preventable gun violence is a harrowing reality that demands attention. What that attention should be, however, is hotly contested with no real resolution in sight. Though the problem is complex and multi-faceted, one area seems to be gaining steam, namely, the prosecution of parents for gun violence committed by their children. Whether for a school shooting or a single person attack, parents have been indicted, tried, convicted, and sentenced for a crime they did not commit. Is this right? Should parents be responsible for major crimes their children commit? In what ways are parents responsible for the safety of their children and others when it comes to firearms?
