Suzanne born 1924 - got her first long cane when she was 24

Suzanne grew up with severe visual impairment – she had no way to know if the drop was 6 inches or 60 inches. She got a long cane three short years after the veterans administration started using them and after a few hours of training incorporated it into her travel. Her family wasn’t thrilled by it – but she wasn’t about to go back to having risk her safety just to get around independently.

She is an outgoing woman who volunteers on her local transit board, she and her husband George regularly travel on organized tours – choosing Adventure Travel because they guarantee their trips to be fully accessible.

You can grow up severely visually impaired without a mobility tool and yet as soon as the long cane became available – she was never without it.
