On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. Hello and welcome to Episode Five of the Poker Punx Podcast! Today, I'm going to discuss the importance of finding your opponent's pain point. What I mean is finding the bet amounts they tend to call (especially on draws or with second best hands) and the bets they fold to without the nuts (to leverage for your bluffs). By carefully observing your opponents' patterns and tendencies, you can strategically pick spots to extract maximum value from your good hands and minimize losses when you are behind. In this episode, I'll be sharing two hands I played along with our first listener-submitted hand. So, let's get started!…
Hello and welcome to Episode Four of the Poker Punx Podcast! Today, I'm excited to discuss the importance of going for value in poker. By carefully observing your opponents' patterns and tendencies, you can strategically pick spots to extract extra value from your good hands and minimize losses when you are behind. In this episode, I'll be sharing four hands that highlight this significance. So, let's get started!…
Welcome to Episode Three of the Poker Punx Podcast. In this episode, I want to share three hands that highlight the significance of observing the players at your table. Although playing live can sometimes feel repetitive, particularly when you're not getting good cards, it's crucial to remain attentive to the game so that you can exploit the tendencies of your opponents to increase your winnings and reduce your losses.…
Welcome to the Poker Punx Podcast Episode Two. For this episode, I have two hands that were very interesting hands. One is from a recent session that I had at Parx, which is my local casino, just outside Philadelphia. The second one is one that I featured on the vlog from quite a while ago actually. It was from a session that I played at the Hard Rock Tampa last year, but it's a hand that stuck with me for all this time because even though it was a hand that I ended up winning, I think that I played it pretty bad and I wanted to do a bit deeper, dive into it and get some insight into what I think I did OK, what I think I did bad, and what the thinking of my opponent in that hand was. The first hand is QhQs on a Qc10c8cAcAs board The second hand is AhKd on an Ac 7d 4s 10c 10s board…
Poker Punx Podcast Episode 1 I want to make this podcast as interactive as possible. So what I'm planning on doing is soliciting requests from you, anyone listening for hand submissions, and what I plan to do is go over one or two of my own hands from sessions that I've played, and also to go over a hand that is submitted from a listener. What I plan to do is if you go to pokerpunx.com , there is a submission form there and you can put in all the pertinent information for the hand and I will select one for each episode to go over. For anyone whose hand I use as a submission, I will send a Poker Punx card protector, which you can see on pokerpunx.com . This way there's a little bit of something for you for taking the time out to help me out and to show my appreciation. The second item that is on the website is a petition, for me to take to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board and show them that vlogging is a net positive for the poker community. I want to try and get some traction on changing their mind about vlogging in Pennsylvania casinos. There are several really good card rooms here in Pennsylvania, and I think that if we can get enough signatures on the petition, I can go to a Gaming Control Board meeting, I hope to be able to convince them that vlogging is helping the poker community far more than any kind of perceived damage it could be doing First Hand is A︎h8h on an AsJd5s2d4s board against a short stack The second hand is KsKh on an AsAc4s10dAh run out against the same opponent.…
