ZWERG – Musician/Drag Artist/Fashion Designer
Manage episode 377531345 series 2901342
ZWERG is the solo musical project of Eldon Thiele, a queer-identifying Canadian-American who grew up singing gospel music with his family and winning piano-playing competitions in his hometown of Moncton, New Brunswick.
At 19, he enlisted the help of local alt-rock god Rick White (Elevator To Hell, Eric’s Trip) to realize his first EP. The resultant Sepsis (1997) was a bloodletting of sorts, a clear rebellion against his conservative Baptist upbringing. This EP was played several times on national radio by Leora Kornfeld, David Wisdom (CBC’s Radiosonic) and Patti Schmidt (CBC’s Brave New Waves).
Thiele went on to release 5 albums, several more EPs, singles and music videos - some of which were aired on MuchMoreMusic. In recent news, ZWERG signed with Canadian music legend Emm Gryner’s Dead Daisy Records for the release of his upcoming album The Centurion, a retrospective journey through 20th-century popular music (set for release in late 2023). The work features string and brass arrangements by long-time collaborator John Philip Shenale (Tori Amos, Billy Idol, Janet Jackson, Jane’s Addiction, Bruce Hornsby, Five For Fighting, Diana Ross, The Bangles, The Beach Boys), John Mullane (of In-Flight Safety), and Robin Anne Ettles (Sol, Shaun LeBlanc).
