It was a pleasure to invite Osahon on for this hour long chat about the happenings of the world of football, yes, football. Having just heard the news about Lyon's potential relegation, it led me to write and analyze my previous research on Ligue 1.
The French Giants are bound for League 2 relegation, the same fate that was handed down last year to FC Bordeaux, who were sent to the bottom tier of French football. Before the pandemic, Ligue 1 were viewing the TV deals across the competitive leagues and needed a TV Deal to propel them as a league and promote their product. However, as opposed to the NBC/Sky Sports deal the Premier League got which extends to North American waters, and in comparison to La Liga and Serie A’s deals with Paramount Plus/TNT and ESPN+ respectively, the league failed to secure the type of collective TV revenue to boost the status of their struggling clubs. The effects of this media deal disaster could be best described by a June 2024 quote to the Athletic, “It’s a national scandal. It’s huge, huge news for the industry. An incoming shipwreck that is just about to hit the rocks and people don’t seem to realise what’s happening.” Athletic 6/2024 The LFP has been trying to sort its new TV deal — for the rights to show Ligue 1 matches from 2024 to 2029 — since October, when an ambitious auction looking to bring in €1billion (£840m; $1.1bn at the current rates) a year was scrapped because there were no takers. At that time, LFP president Vincent Labrune had hoped to spark a bidding war involving current broadcast partners Amazon Prime and Canal+, as well as Qatar-based beIN Sports, British sports streamer DAZN and potentially U.S. media giant Apple. Yet no offer came and so Labrune was forced to go back to the drawing board.” The team are owned by Eagle Football Group and owner John Texter, who owns 77% stake of the club and owns Brazilian club Botafogo, and London club Crystal Palace, has publicly said he’s confident they’ll meet the financial guidelines in the appropriate deadlines, but having seen what has happened to Bordeaux should spell plenty of warning in France.
Also discussed in the episode, Jurgen Klopp taking over in his new role with Red Bull, and yet they are 9-1-1, leaders of the Premier League, and City's "slide" despite being 2nd. We also praise Nottingham Forest! What could Pep's next tinker that could shift the forward as Rodri will be out for the season. Alot of this transitioned into discussing teams across the other major leagues.
We finish the episode discussing the incidents in France and the Netherlands being reported in the New York Times, and the conflicting reports. There have been other attacks on players and supporters representing both sides of the issue across central Europe.

Thanks for finding my show and giving me a listen. I fully appreciate it.
