Strong communication is key to any relationship. However, the most influential form of communication is non-verbal. However, in a virtual world, how do you express non-verbal communication through an email, in a newsletter, or a text? Nonverbal reduces conflict, promotes positive relationships, encourages communication, which makes you approachable. Today on the podcast, Laura-Sue and I brainstorm how to apply effective communication with our students, co-workers, and administration. Thank you so much for a great season 2! Raising morale and building a community should not be a hard thing, but it’s often neglected. The value is sometimes lost within a school or classroom. As I think about my favorite jobs and classes, they all felt like a family or a community. I was seen and heard. Lindsey Howe spent years teaching students the life skill of test-taking concerning the SAT/ACT. The aim is to support students to worry about the test less to show their knowledge and skills more. No one likes standardized testing, but unfortunately, testing is here to stay. I know I personally clam up with nerves at the idea of taking a quiz. Our students are experiencing the same, but more exposure and practice can lower the anxiety. Educators will always need formative and summative assessments, but I hope they are not such high stakes someday. Additionally, most careers require certification tests from educators, construction inspectors, architects, engineers, plumbers, doctors, and lawyers, which requires test-taking skills. Thankfully America is taking steps in the right direction, such as colleges moving away from requiring the SAT or ACT or high schools are using the ACT/SAT exam as their end-of-year exam. The flipped classroom is an instructional strategy and a type of blended learning focused on student engagement and active learning, giving the instructor a better opportunity to deal with mixed levels, student difficulties, and differentiated learning preferences during in- class time. Dyslexia makes up 80% of learning disabilities, yet often teachers aren't given instruction or PD on how to support these students (Degirmenci et al. 2020, p 31). Dr. Lauren is a Dyslexia Advocate with a doctorate in Education. Her experiences range from being a Special Education teacher to a Learning Specialist/Instructional Coach. Her insight into dyslexia was exactly what I was looking for in explaining dyslexia in simple terms and ideas on supporting students with dyslexia. Nicole Bryson is an expert in ELA/Writing and a District Teacher of the Year winner. Last year alone, she received over 50 hours of professional development in writing. In the 21st Century, students need much more than content knowledge. There are specific skills required to be successful that can and should be taught through content. Skills that include: critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, information literacy, media literacy, technology literacy, flexibility, leadership, initiative, productivity, and social skills. Wouldn't we all agree that all careers require these skills in the form of writing? Would we then agree that we should teach our students these skills in their writing? In today's episode, Nicole and I discuss why students should write regularly and how to implement writing in our virtual classrooms. Writing is not limited to ELA classes and a writing workshop. As we finish season 1, I'm feeling so humbled and honored to be a part of something so awesome. I'm thankful for the teachers I spoke to over the past five months and excited to bring more teachers together in season 2. However, I want to end season 1 with stories from my classrooms over the past eight years. The three I share with you today I hope to encourage you, support you, empower you, and make you laugh. You are not an island but we all know it sometimes feels that way. It's my hope today that you say, "I've felt that way too." Currently, she is teaching High School ELA Special Education at Idaho Virtual Academy. Supporting a child's needs shouldn't neglect their talents and gifts. We should be pulling those in whenever possible to help them. Special Education, in my opinion, is very challenging but very rewarding. Imagine you are a first-year virtual teacher at a brand new virtual school! Can you even imagine? I can't. Being a first-year virtual teacher is overwhelming enough but to be a part of a brand new school... Wow! I'm impressed. Have you heard of project-based learning? I have but not enough to really try it. It seemed like too much during the one training I went to. I also thought, "How am I suppose to do projects in a virtual classroom? How is that even possible?" Like most training I've attended, they are talking to you and normally without examples or hands-on experience. Which is funny because project-based learning is completely student-centered. However after talking to Rusie Robison from Destinations Career Academy of Colorado, I'm completely inspired and see that it's not as hard as I was making it out to be in my mind. Yes it's going to require me to do some upfront work, but nothing I haven't ever done before. I don't need to go get a different degree or attend a training to make it happen. May is Mental Health Month. Although I am an ambivert that leans more to my extrovert side, I did live in depression for two years. I gave my husband an ulcer, I emotionally neglected my family and threw myself into activities that made me feel alive. Depression, anxiety, counseling are all words that have a negative stereotype attached to them. Although they are typically negative in the emotion, that doesn't mean they should be ignored. If you do, you may implode on yourself causing destruction to yourself, your family, friends, work, etc. Today on the podcast, I share my story. To be a powerful virtual teacher, sometimes it means understanding the unknown. Sometimes it means that you show grace to families experiencing the indescribable. What it does not mean is that you lower your expectations for every excuse under the sun. Hold true to your expectations but maybe show grace to those who need it the most. Furthermore, to be a powerful virtual teacher, we need to understand how to take our students a deeper level of knowledge. When it comes to learning, I never want to be the ceiling. We must do our part to learn the types of questionings for our content to support our students. If our students want to be among the starts, we should never be the reason they miss the target. Today is week 4 of our 7 Week Serius on the qualities I think it takes to be a powerful virtual teacher! This week is all about being a Teachable Teacher. Currently, virtual education is growing due to the COVID19 school shutdown. In my experience, the teachers who transition the best to virtual education are the teachable ones. Not the ones that say, "I'm too old for this" or "It can't be done." If you want to thrive in a virtual classroom, you must be willing to learn how to use one. Although there isn't much research on virtual education in the K-12 public school setting, K12.com teachers do have a large database of professional development. If you are not associated with a K12.com school, it's my hope that your school does have a similar database. The wheel isn't being invented right now, it is in a constant state of being tested.
